1898 Montrose "The Riverside district, one of the most fertile in the valley,
is located on the Uncompahgre river, above Montrose, and extends from the hogback, above the city to the county line.
Owing to the Indian agency, it is about the oldest settled
portion of the county. The people are proud of their schools,
and this neighborhood boasts an incorporated literary society, which
owns a fine hall, and is known far and wide as the Uncompahgre Literary society.
It holds regular meetings and gives various entertainments in
its hall, and interest seems never to lag.
It numbers among its members some of the most influential
and prominent citizens. The valley at the Uncompahgre post office is some five
miles in width, and the spleudiid homes and fruit ranches attest its fertility.
Most of the land is under individual ditch, as it is near the river, and the water supply is practically unlimited.
Among the oldest settlers is J. A. Fenlon who contributes an article in this issue on the past history of the post.
Others of the earliest settlers are the Callaway brothers, David having a splendid home in that section.
E. L. Hayes came to the valley in 1884, and is now one of our prosperous farmers, with 250 head of cattle and
other stock, a fine residence and beautiful farm,
where alfalfa, timothy, clover, etc., are raised.
H. M. Stark has also a fine residence property and surroundings, as has Neal Peterson, who has a neat 80 acre farm.
Among the substantial farmers are Uri Hotchkiss, Chas. Raish, Wm. Conklin, Andy Shore, G. B. Fuller, H. Dresser,
John Conway, Parker Lupher, J. M. Kelsey, K. D. Willis and dozens of others who have made this section what it is today.
Wheat grows to perfection here, and on the east side of the river particularly there is raised some of the finest grain grown in America.
The fruit crop has always taken prizes at all our fairs, and is noted for its flavor and variety.
The alfalfa grows luxuriantly, and crops of 7 tons to the acre each year are not uncommon. The settlers
have recently erected a fine brick school house, the best and most substantial district school house in the county.
Many cattle are being fed on the ranches of this locality, and the spring market will find that
the feeders of this section know their business, and that the long ricks of hay and excellent care make their stock second to none.
Uncompahgre is the post office and is a small place with a store and a blacksmith shop,
which is ably tended by E. McSherry, the store being owned and run by J. A. Fenlon. In seeking a location where a home may be built up
and where everything possible to be grown in this locality is grown,
the homeseeker should not overlook the Riverside
district commonly known as Fort Crawford, for it is here that such a place may be found. It shall not go without mention that in this locality are some of the largest berry raisers.
Messrs Moore, Doutbitt, and others making immense shipments in the early berry
season, while a second crop is grown which is truly a marvel,
commanding good prices in the late markets when
other places where the berry is raised are short."
