"The police have received word from Keller Heist of Sheridan, Wyo., to keep a sharp lookout for Mrs. Nettie Peterson and her fifteen-months'-old child. Mrs. Peterson left her mother's home in Missouri Valley, la., recently. She was last heard from at Wahoo, where she stopped at the Commercial hotel. She was in a pitiable condition, her body being a mass of bmises. She is supposed to have come to Lincoln, as it is known that her aunt, Mrs. Eva Heist, lived here once. Her name does not appear in the directory now and it is supposed that she, too, has left."

"J.H. Peterson, the well known north side barber, was drowned in Shoal creek yesterday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock while in bathing at the swimming hole known as "Rock Bottom" just above the wagon bridge.
Mr. Peterson, accompanied by his wife, stepson and daughter, and a girl companion, drove out to the creek just after the storm yesterday to go bathing. Mr. Peterson was an extra good swimmer, and took the girls into the water one at a time for a swim. He was in the water with his step-daughter, a young girl of probably 15 years, and was swimming with her, when he was evidently overcome by cramps. He told the girl to let go his arm and shoved her as far toward the bank as possible, sinking himself immediately afterwards. The girl herself went under but came to the surface and was carried by the current toward the bank a short distance down stream, where she was helped ashore by Mrs. Peterson.
After he went down he did not rise again, and his family, in a terrified condition from the awful occurrence, notified some boys who were passing on the nearby road, and sent them for help.
A phone message was sent to town from Trust Ratliff's residence near the scene of the tragedy and it was not long until a large crowd arrived on the scene and search was at once commenced for the body, which was found by Walter Stroop quite a little distance down the stream. After being taken from the water the body was brought to the rooms of the F.J. Bigham Undertaking Co. and prepared for burials after it was seen that all hope of resuscitation was over.
The occurrence is one of the saddest in the history of our city and the death of Mr. Peterson, coming as it did in the presence of his family, makes it indeed a heart rending and sorrowful affair.
Few men in our community are better known and liked than was Jim Peterson, and it is with sorrowing hearts and grave faces that our citizens talk of his untimely death. He was about 40 years old, a member of our Fire Company and also of the Modern Woodmen in which order he carried a $1000 life insurance policy.
The funeral will be held from the M.E. Church, South, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the Woodmen."
