1893 Greeley "J. C. Higley, the populist candidate for county clerk,
is an old and respected resident of Weld county, having lived here previous to the settlement of the
colony. He was elected as assessor shortly after the settlement of Greeley and made one of the best
officials in that capacity. Since that time he has been engaged in farming,
and until the organization of the farmers alliance in Weld county did not, for many years,
trouble himself much about political affairs. It is needless to say that Mr. Higley was also an
ardent republican until he saw the grand old organization that once covered itself with glory,
fall from its high estate, and become the fence for robbers and thieves while they plundered
the nation and the people; then with the formation of the new party, soon destined to displace both the
old parties in the councils of the nation,
he promptly joined its ranks and talked and worked for its success from that day to this."
