August 1902 Durango "Jerome Blanchard of Denver was a visitor at Silverton last week, coming for the purpose of looking up the location of some rich discoveries that he made in company with the Baker par--Ity that explored the Silverton site in i1 and gave it the name of Baker's Park. They had terrible weather among the mountains on those days, and the winter storms were too much for the party. They scattered, and it is rumored from the finding of a wagon wheel in the gap which now bears the name, Wagon Wheel Gap, that they passed along that road on their wav over the Rockies. Mr. Blanchard was only 18 years of age at the time, and the memory of his early days contains that of a pretty rough experience among the snows of the western steeps. In the busy town which now occupies the basin, he found on his recent visit quite a different place from that which he left forty years ago. Mr. Howard, who was also one of the Baker party, and now lives at Howardsville, can tell better than any one else how the place has grown out of its snow drifts and become a populous town. Silverton or Baker's Park, as it was called, didn't amount to much for twelve vears after its first discovery. Then Colonel 1. M. Snowdon came with his party, and built the little log cabin on Snowdon avenue, where he still keeps bachelor quarters, in order to cave the townsite, which had been located by the company, and provide a place in which to hold the first election in '74. "
