was Josie Templeton, and the next teacher, who was contracted for the summer term,
was Viva Gilliland."
"The first couple to be married in the town of Wray chose the date of July 20, 1887.
Mr. John Templeton, the bridegroom, was an uncle of Mrs. H. V. Kitzmiller, and the bride was a
lady from Iowa. The Wray Rattler printed the following interesting account of the wedding in
the issue of July 28, 1887:
Married, at the Wray hotel, Wray, Colo., July 20th, 1887,
Rev. W. Marshall of Yuma, officiating, Mr. John P. Templeton of Wray, Colo.,
and Miss Matilda McNeely, of Mills Co., Iowa. The contracting parties have the
best wishes of The Rattler and their many friends."
" She (Jennie Hellman Grigsby)
arrived in Wray in 1886 hoping to teach the first school proposed but found this promised to
Miss Templeton (mother of Mrs. Edna Kitzmiller). She arranged to live with Miss Templeton and both took claims. Mrs. Grigsby taught the first school on the flats south of Wray. "

"The friends of Mrs. E. J. Bales were shocked last Thursday evening,
to hear of her sudden death. It was not generally known that she was ill, and none knew,
even the immediate family, that her sickness was serious. She was taken sick on Tuesday with
neuralgia of the stomach, and on Thursday about noon was feeling some worse,
but nothing serious was apprehended until about 4 o'clock, when she suddenly grew worse and
almost immediately passed away. Word was sent Wayne at Denver and Edna at Pacific Junction, Iowa,
and they arrived Friday morning.
Her brothers Charles and Henry Oxley of Pleasant Dale, Nebr., and Nate Oxley of Sanborn,
Nebr., were present at the funeral.
Anna Oxley was born March 13, 1853, near Wayland, Iowa, and died September 22, 1910,
age 57 years, 6 months and 9 days.
She was married to Dr. E. J. Bales in December 1899, since which time she has made this
city her home. She was a member of the M. E. church and of the Eastern Star of this city,
under whose charge the funeral services were held. The services were held at the M. E. church
Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, the oration being delivered by her pastor, P. W. Imboden,
after which the remains were followed to their last resting place in Grandview cemetery
by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.
The members of the Eastern Star, of which the deceased was a member, attended the funeral in
a body, the ladies being dressed in white, and under the ritual of the order the burial
services were arranged ."
January 23, 1913 "Miss Edna Bales was called to Pacific Junction,
Iowa, last Sunday by the death of her Grandfather Templeton. The immediate cause of the death
was erysipelas. Mr. Templeton had reached the age of 86 years. "

"Dr. E. J. Bales was born in Xenia, Ohio, January 4, 1850, being one of
the youngest of a family of ten boys and four girls. He passed out of this life December 10, 1925,
having reached the age of 75 years, 11 months and 6 days.
While yet a boy he moved with his parents to Kingman, Indiana and when he stepped across
the threshold of young manhood he chose the medical profession as his life’s work and entered
college at Cincinnati, Ohio, from which institution he graduated in 1876.
Following his graduation he spent some time in Missouri, Arizona and New Mexico.
He came to Yuma County with the early homesteaders February 15, 1886.
The following year he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Templeton.
This union was blessed with three children. The wife and mother passed away in June, 1893,
only to be followed three weeks later with the youngest, Eugene. Six years later he was
united in marriage to Miss Anna Orley, whe died in 1910.
Dr. Bales was a member of Akron Commandry No. 21, Knight Templar,
also of Wray Lodge No. 71 A. F. & A. M. He was also a charter member of the Eastern Star,
Wray Chapter No. 65.
He is survived by one brother, J. W., a son, Wayne Bales, of California,
a daughter, Mrs. Edna Kitzmiller of Wray, and a granddaughter, Deloma.
Dr. Bales spent his later years in California. About a year ago he returned to Wray to live.
But the ravages of old age had made great inroads upon his once rugged physique and he failed
rapidly. His last hours were peaceful and unattended by great bodily discomfort.
Thus he closed his book of life."

Spouse:
Grace A. Merrill.
November 1918 Los Angeles "Discovering that he had too many wives, Lieut. Wayne E. Bales of
the United States Army today filed suit in the superior court asking that his marriage to
Mrs. Grace A. Merrill, an attractive nurse of Long Beach,
be annulled. Bales, according to his complaint, learned that he had two wives on October 27,
20 days after he wedded Mrs. Merrill. His wedding permit was issued October 7.
The couple went immediately to the residence of Rev. James I. Myers,
where the marriage ceremony took place. The honeymoon was passed at Long Beach.
More than two weeks ago, Bales received information that a woman he married several years
ago was still his wife. He says he wedded a second time under the impression that his
first wife had obtained a decree of divorce. Bales is a native of Ohio.
He has served in the Army in the Philippines.
The second Mrs. Bales was also born in Ohio."
In 1920 Los Angeles, Wayne is a fireman, divorced, in a lodging house.

following an operation for appendicitis. The body will be shipped to Wray for funeral services. Arrangements have not been made as this jjaper goes to press."
