May 29,1899 "Mrs. J. M. Emanuel died Wednesday morning very suddenly and unexpectedly.
She had been ailing for a month or more, and became very much worse on the Saturday before
her death, but got better ahd was up again aud doing her work till almost her last hour.
No one but herself realized how seriously ill she was.
About fifteen minutes before her death she told her husband it would do no good to send
for another doctor and said 'good bye' to him, and passed away almost before they knew she
was dying. It was very sad.
She leaves a husband and four little children, Leo, Patsie, Willie and Anna Mary.
She was born in Bellmullett, County Mayo, forty years ago, her maiden name being
Winnie Wiggins, and was married thirteen years ago, May 10th, at North Bend, Neb.
She was a member of the Catholic Church, a noble woman, faithful wife and devoted mother.
She was buried in Wray Cemetery yesterday; a large concourse of sorrowing friends paying
their last tribute of love to their sister who has gone before.
Child. “Mother. O mother, my heart calls fot you,
With strong yearning and passionate pain,
Long I to-night for your presence again.
Mother "One short sleep past, we wake eternally.
And death no more shall be."

November 1911 "On last Monday morning about 9 : 00 o clock,
Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Burns and daughter, Katharine, Mr. John Tuomey and Miss Mary Tuomey,
and Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Wright and little daughter, Genevieve, went out to the home
of John Emmanuel to partake of a surprise dinner that was given in honor of Mr. Emmanuel's
fifty-fourth birthday by his two little daughters, Constay and Anna Mary,
who proved themselves capable housekeepers, as the dinner was pronounced by those
who were there, to be as fine as any old experienced person could do. The
dinner consisted of three courses and was made merry by the jokes pouring forth from each
one there. The party presented Mr. Emmanuel with a fine large rocking chair,
which will make rest more than a pleasure, after a day's work.
To say the day was enjoyed by all present is expressing it mildly."
August 17, 1939 "Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Evans and family and Miss Marie Broderick had as their guests at dinner Sunday evening John Emanuel of Denver, Father Cyprian Emanuel of Cleveland, Ohio, Father Jos. Korb, Miss Harriett McClain, and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Menke and three children."
"John M. Emanuel, well known and highly esteemed citizen of this community for many years,
passed away suddenly at Saint Anthony’s hospital in Denver Wednesday morning, Aug. 23rd, 1939.
Mr. Emanuel was 83 years old. He was a pioneer citizen of this community.
He had made his home at St. Anthony’s hospital in Denver for about ten years.
Mr. Emanuel returned to Denver only a few days ago after having visited at the home of his
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Menke.
Mr. Emanuel is survived by four children: Mrs. Wm. Menke near Vernon,
Pat Emanuel, Scribner, Neb., Father Cyprian Emanuel, Cleveland, Ohio,
Anna Mary Emanuel, a Sister at Davenport, Ia.
Data for a complete obituary notice is not available this week but will be printed next week. The remains will be brought to Wray for funeral service and burial. As we go to press this morning information is not available as to the time of the funeral.
John M. Emanuel was born in Huettersdorf, Prussia, Germany, Nov. 27, 1857,
and passed away at St. Anthony’s hospital in Denver, August 23, 1939, at the age of 81 years,
8 months, and 26 days. Funeral services were held in Wray Saturday, August 26,
conducted by Father Joseph Korb, and the remains were laid to rest in Grandview cemetery
besides the remains of Mrs. Emanuel.
John Emanuel came to America at the age of 16, and on May 11, 1886 he married
Miss Winnifred Higgins at Fremont, Neb. Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel and baby Leo came to Wray in
1887 and baby Leo died in 1892. Mr. Emanuel homesteaded a piece of land nine miles west of
Wray and for a quarter of a century resided thereon.
About eleven years ago Mr. Emanuel went to Denver to reside and he had made his home
at St. Anthony’s hospital in recent years.
Surviving Mr. Emanuel are his four children, Patrick, Father Cyprian, Sister Anna Mary,
and Mrs. Wm. Menke, one brother Peter Emanuel who is 89 years old residing at Snyder, Neb.,
eight grandchildren, many less near relatives and a host of friends.
John Emanuel was one of the first assessors in Yuma county and he had no deputy in
that early day. Mr. Emanuel rode horseback all over the county in the discharge of his
duties as county assessor.
The death of John Emanuel removes another of those sturdy pioneers whose contribution
to this community can hardly be overestimated. The name Emanuel is closely associated
with the early day history of this portion of Yuma county. John Emanuel was a splendid
type of gentleman and citizen. Although he had resided in Denver in late years,
he continued to maintain a friendly interest in the people of this town and community
and in the development that has taken place. Mr. Emanuel visited here frequently and
his friends were legion. He was a man of optimistic temperament and he had an abiding
faith in Yuma county and her people. Acquaintances far and near will learn of the death of
John Emanuel with sincere regret."

CONSTANCE
October 12, 1916 "Mr. and Mrs. William Menke have returned from the
Pacific Coast, where they have been spending their honeymoon. They visited friends in Wray
from Friday until Monday and then went on to Exeter, Nebraska, where they are to make their home.

November 1933 "Miss Anna Mary Emanuel and her niece, Miss Patrica Menke,
escaped injury when they turned over in the Chevrolet 6 coupe they were driving to the Wm. Menke
home last Saturday night. Just south of the Frank Cantrall place, the ladies had a flat tire
on their car, and Miss Menke, who was driving, set her brakes, lost control of the car,
and went into the ditch. The car turned over on its top and the other back tire blew out,
but the car was not damaged to any great extent. Neither Miss Emanuel or Miss Menke were
injured."
July 13, 1939 "A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Menke the 30th of June, at
the Wray hospital. The lad weighed 8 pounds and 13 ounces upon arrival.
He will be taught to answer to the name, William John, the William being for his father,
and the John being for his grandfather, John Emanuel."
September 1939 "The late John Emanuel owned a dog, a full blooded Newfoundland, that is as fine a looking canine as one can find anywhere. This dog is little more than a year old and yet it weighs 110 pounds. It’s color is black, it’s eyes are bright and sparkling, and it is of a quiet and peaceful temperament. This dog is. slow to become angry, but when it does become angry, look out! Dogs of the Newfoundland breed are valuable dogs. Mr. Emanuel thought a great deal of his dog and shortly before he passed away he expressed the wish that the dog be given to his baby grandson, William John Menke, baby son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Menke, and so the dog has a new home out at the Menke place where it is rapidly making friends with the entire family. "
October 6, 1949 "William John, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William
Menke, died late Tuesday afternoon at his parents' home.
