"Mrs. Mary Anna Castle, mother of a widely known Yuma county family,
and another of the pioneer women whose courage, capacity for enduring the hardships
of the early days on the plains and strong faith made possible the growth of this community,
died Wednesday, November 19, at the home of her son, Sheriff Raymond Van Horn,
where she had been for the past month. For several years previously she had lived with another
son, Charles Van Horn, of near Yuma.
Death claimed her at the age of 88 years and two days. The story of Mrs. Castle’s life is
one of courage and hardships, leavened with the joy she found in contacts with her family
and with her Christian faith that found its outlet in her activities thru her long and
eventful life.
She was born to John Houghton and Sarah Smith in Butler county, Ohio, on November 17, 1853,
and in early life became a member of the Baptist church, remaining a faithful Christian thruout her life.
On March 18, 1875, she was married to Thomas R. Graham, with Rev. J. Cox officiating.
The two daughters born to this union, Leora and Edith, preceded their mother in death.
On January 14, 1886, she became the wife of Frank J. Van Horn, and seven children were born
to them. Ralph died in July, 1911. Clifford died at three years of age and his twin sister
died at birth. Another daughter, twin sister to Mrs. Mable Peavler, who survives,
also died at birth.
The surviving children are Mrs. Peavler who resides at Emmett, Idaho,
Raymond and Charles. The father died in January, 1899, eleven years after the family
had settled on a homestead west of Wray, and the mother courageously remained on the
homestead to rear her four small children. Her strong religious faith, which
was demonstrated by her custom of reading daily her favorite chapter of scripture,
the Twenty-Third Psalm, led her into many acts of community betterment.
She helped organize a Sunday school in the old Eureka school house, now known as the
Bethel school, in pioneer days. She was organist in the Sunday school for many years.
She also helped organize the Barnes Sunday school and took part in other activities
that made this frontier a better place in which to live.
In November, 1902, she was married to Lester D. Castle, who died in October of 1924.
Besides her children, survivors include a stepdaughter, Mary Van Horn McCarthy, of Bellflower, California,
seventeen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many less near relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church in Wray, conducted by Rev. William Brown, and burial was in the Yuma cemetery."
