"Mrs. Ella Bolender, a pioneer resident of Wray and one of this locality's highly
esteemed citizens, died suddenly at 7 o'clock Saturday night, about an hour after she was stricken
with a paralytic stroke. She was 74 years old last November 2, and had remained unusually active
for her years until the final day of her life. During the previous week she had helped canvass
the town in the interests of her church and those whom she contacted were impressed with her activity
and her zest for life. Her death was a shock to her family and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Wray Adventist church,
conducted by Rev. Floyd Byers of Boulder, assisted by L. E. Rogers, who came here from the
Western Slope. She had long been an ardent member of the Adventist faith and her devotion
to her religious beliefs characterized her daily life. She was burled beside her husband in Grandview cemetery.
After Mrs. Bolender's death, the following brief obituary, prepared by her own hand was
found among her effects:
'Carrie Ellen Deer, daughter of Willis and Nancy Deer, was born November 2, 1867,
near Franklin. Indiana. At the age of 18, she, with her mother and four brothers,
moved to Shelby County, Missouri. On February 9, 1888, she was united in marriage to
Chas. D. Bolender and they came to Colorado to share the joys and hardships of frontier life.
To this union four girls were born. On December 1, 1885, she was united with the
Christian church at Walnut Grove, Missouri, and in April 1896, she with her husband joined
the adventist church and were baptized by L. F. Truly April 16, 1896.'
Local people will remember much more than this about Mrs. Bolender.
The pioneers of this community made a contribution to this country's growth,
and wielded an influence in its development that cannot be told with brief words on paper.
The family took a preemption on a farm south of Laird after they came to Yuma county,
and they continued to live there until 1917 when they moved into Wray.
Mr. Bolender died on July 11, 1927.
One daughter, Mrs. Otis Cox, died at Moravia, Idaho, in 1937.
The daughters who survive are Mrs. Lee Kellar of Riddle, Oregon;
Mrs. Clair Dillon of Golden and Mrs. Reuben Klmberlin of Montrose.
There are also a brother, Sam Dee of El Paso, Texas, thirteen grand children,
five great-grandchildren and many, less near relatives."
OMA
September 1958 " Mrs. Lee Kellar of Myrtle Creek, Ore., a former resident of this
community and a sister-in-law of Mrs. Albert Wessel and Mrs. Ollie Littlefield,
died Friday night, according to word received by the Wray relatives.
Mrs. Kellar was the former Oma Bolander."
"Oma Leah Bolender, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bolender, was born
December 20, 1891, in a sod house near Wray, Colorado, and died September 12, 1958,
at her home near Canyonville, Ore. She was 66 years, nine months and eight days old
at the time of her unexpected death.
She was married to Lee Kellar on March 27, 1917, at Wray where they farmed,
moving to Oregon in 1920. No children blessed this union, but a nephew, Charles Taylor,
made his home with them. A long time member of the Rebekah lodge, was
ever able and willing to instruct or fill any office or entertain with her comic readings.
She was also a member of the Rebekah club, an extension club, and active in community affairs.
Survivors include her husband, two sisters, Cora Dillon of Golden
and Anna Kimberlin of Montrose, and many less near relatives and friends.
Her parents and an older sister, Mrs. Edna Cox, preceded her in death.
Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, September 16, from the Ganz funeral parlor
with the Rebekah lodge in charge of the service at the Memorial Garden cemetery in Roseburg.
Attending the services were Mrs. Dillon of Golden, Mrs. Kimberlain and
Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Miles of Montrose, and Mr. Kellar's sister and husband,
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schlenker (Blanche) of Portland,
who remained ror a longer stay with Mr. Kellar and the Taylor family."
"Mrs. Gordon King received a telephone call on Saturday morning from her cousin,
Charles Taylor of Myrtle Creek, Ore., telling of the death that morning of Lee Kellar,
following a heart attack. Mr. Kellar, a brother of Mrs. Albert Wessel and
Mrs. Ollie Littlefield of Wray and Mrs. Blanche Sehlenker of Portland, Ore., had visited
his sisters and other relatives and friends In Wray in January of this year.
Services were held at Roseburg Ore., on Tuesday of this week."
ANNA
March 1929 "Rube Kimberlin and family moved to the Bolander place Monday. The young daughter Isla entered school the same day."
May 1935 " The Legion Auxiliary gave a farewell party and handkerchief shower
Monday afternoon for Mrs. Rube Kimberlin, who is moving to Montrose, Colo."
November 1946 " Also from the mailbag comes a letter of protest from the western slope.
Mrs. Anna Kimberlin, who formerly lived here and will be remembered by many,
writes from Montrose to object to our libel of that favored part of terra firms.
Says Mrs. Kimberlin, 'In your paper of November 7 you have an article headed Widespread
Storm Blankets State with Heavy Snowfall.’
I want to let you know that we’ve never had any snow at our place, only a few flakes in the air
at times. It isn’t such a large territory here, but we live in the state.
There are mountains in every direction with snow on and we (had a little rain,
but never any snow in or around Olathe and very little at Montrose.
Having once lived not far from where Mrs. Kimberlin now resides,
I should have known that that particular part of Colorado, where good weather is as common as a
John L. Lewis coal strike, would probably be spared even the recent snow and ice that
hit the other parts of the state. "
