Hollis M. Johnson
Hollis M. Johnson, was born May 13, 1828 in Chautauqua County, New York, son of David Johnson.

His pension application said that in Jerico (probably
Jericho , Kane County, Illinois) Hollis married Polly Humiston, born July 11, 1831 in New York. Polly was the daughter of Elial Humiston, and possibly was born in Oneida County, New York (her brothers were born there).

Several Johnson families lived in Kendall and Kane Counties (the southern townships of Kane County were formerly part of Kendall County). The History of Kendall County says that Reuben Johnson in the 1840's was said to have kept the abolitionist station east of Dr. Burke's station in Little Rock.

A Polly Johnson was Excluded from the Bristol (Kendall County, Illinois, just south of Kane County) Baptist Church on September 9, 1848. Hollis Johnson was Excluded September 15, 1849.

In 1859 Jericho was "not claimed as a village, but there is a post office, a church (occupied currently by the Methodists and Congregationalists). There is also a district school, a mechanic's shop and a public house. It is a good farming country, beautiful and healthful."

In 1850 Hollis was in Marquette County, Wisconsin, Indian Sands 144, farmer, age 23 b NY with Polly 20 b NY , Charles H. 3 b Ill, Prudence 3/12 b Wisconsin, and Sylvester James 20 b NY

In 1860 they are in Cedar township, Clinton County, Iowa.
Hollis is listed as HORACE, 33, farming, with $250 in personal property - no real estate - born in New York.
Polly is 30, also born in New York
Charles H. is 12, born in Illinois
Phebe J. is 10, born in Wisconsin. Both attended school during the year
Elli M. is 2, born in Iowa
Living with them is Abraham P. Scott, 36, - no occupation listed - $30 in personal property, born in New York.

On the preceding page (140) are Elial B. Humeston (Polly's father), Amos Humeston (probably a brother), and Charles Franklin (married HUMERSTIN, Louisa in Clinton County 19 May 1855). Charles might have been related to Jane Franklin, who married Sylister Huneston in Kane County, Illinois on February 12, 1854.
On the same page as Hollis is Enos Humeston, 61, farmer, $1000 in real estate, $500 personal, born in Connecticut.

Private in Co H, 26th Iowa Infantry from Aug 9, 1862 to June 6, 1865. Wounded at Arkansas Post , the battle in which Sylvester Humiston of the same company was killed, and dysentery at Atlanta. There was a later Hollis Johnson with Spanish-American War service(Co. E, 51st Iowa Infantry).

His August 13, 1900 affidavit in Phebe's pension application said he had known his son-in-law William Riley Woodward for five years prior to the 1866 marriage.

Nebraska Land Book 99, page 238, has him filing for the south half of the SW quarter and the north half of the NW quarter of Section 31, 8 North, 14 West (a couple of miles from son-in-law William Riley Woodward's filing in Section 28] on Feb 27, 1879. That claim was cancelled April 14, 1885. R.41754.

In the 1882-1883 Nebraska Gazeteer he was listed as proprieter of the Johnson House in Lowell, population 75.

In 1885 he was in Lowell twp, Kearney Co, NE with Polly, Jessie age 16? b Iowa, son-in-law Henry Hoffman, dau Ella age 27 b Iowa, Ethel 7 months b NE, boarder J.E. Morrall age 29, and servant Isaac Roush. Hollis was unable to communicate to the census taker because of nervousness. It list both his parents as born in Massachusetts.

In the 1886 Nebraska Gazeteer he is listed as a farmer in Lowell.

Polly died January 21, 1890.

In an 1894 affidavit filed for support of Enos Humeston's pension, Hollis was living in Kinesaw, Adams County, Nebraska. He said he was 66 years old, and he was with Enos on the Black River, Mississippi on the last day of July 1863, in the 26th Iowa, Co H. "I have been acquainted with Enos H. Humeston, the applicant, ever since he was a boy.... I saw him all the time before, during and after he was afllicted until he was discharged....."

In 1900 he was a resident of the Grand Island, Nebraska Veterans home.

 

The 1900 census listing of the Soldier and Sailor Home has him as Hallis Johnson, age 72, born May 1828 in New York, farmer, married 40 years. The listing says his father's birthplace was Ireland, and his mother's birthplace was Germany.

The Hoffman family in 1900 is in Kenesaw precinct, Adams County. Ethel is 15, and Roy is 12. Henry is still a carpenter.
Hollis died February 24, 1920. He and Polly are buried in Lowell Township, Kearney County, Nebraska.
