1884 Rail Car Runaway

March 9, 1884

Nine cars loaded with coal, and standing on the switch at Akron, were started down the grade by the wind of Thursday. Approaching trains were at once notified, and several side-tracked.
At Haigler the passenger train switched for the wild cars, and the engine started in pursuit, overtaking the cars between Benkelman and Haigler, and run them into a switch at Benkelman. The cars had made 100 miles at a lightning speed before being captured.
