Third Generation
Darrel Behrendsen
Darrel was born and raised on a farm near Yuma, Colorado. Darrel served his country in the United States Navy and returned to Denver at the conclusion of his Naval service. Darrel began his law enforcement career with a brief stint in the Denver Sheriff’s Department.
In 1956, Darrel joined the Denver Police Department serving over twenty five years. During Darrel’s career he distinguished himself with training involving the handling of hazardous materials. Darrel wrote a book on handling of hazardous materials that has www trademark worldwide and was recognized by the State of Colorado as Safety Man of the Year.
Darrel trained individuals on the handling of hazardous materials serving as an Associate Staff member for the United States Department of Transportation and held a Vocational Instructors credential from Colorado State University.
Finally, in 1981 Darrel was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Rocky Mountain Poison Control Center in Denver. Darrel also has served as the President of the Denver Police Retiree Association and has been active with the museum since 2013.
