Clifford Arthur Killed in Action in SaipanBattle
Parents Receive Telegram Telling of Death on July 31.Pfc. Clifford Arthur, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Arthur, of near Flagler,was killed in action in the battle for Saipan, according to a telegram receivedby his folks on Monday, July 31. The Arthurs live in Washington County in theArickaree community, although their address is Flagler.
No information as to what day the young marine was killed was contained inthe telegram but a letter containing more details will follow, undoubtedly, assoon as the war department receives the information.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur had received a letter dated July 7, from their son,saying that he was engaged in the battle for Saipan, but that he had comethrough the campaign thus far without a scratch, so his death must haveoccurred after that date.
An attempt is being made by the local Red Cross chapter to secure andemergency furlough for Pvt. Melvin Arthur, brother of Clifford, who isstationed at Camp Barkley, Texas, so that he can be with his mother for a time while she is recovering from the shock of her son's death.
Clifford volunteered for service with the marines on October 6, 1942, andhas been in that branch of the service since that time. He has seenconsiderable action in the South Pacific theatre since that time.
He was well known in the Arickaree community, having lived in thatneighborhood all of his life, and he will be missed by a large circle offriends as well as by his parents and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held for Pfc. Clifford Allen Arthur at the CopeCommunity Church on Monday afternoon with the Rev. George O. Horn, pastor ofthe Akron Assembly of God Church, in charge. Military services conducted byAkron VFW Post No. 8064, will be held at the graveside at the CopeCemetery.
Pfc. Arthur enlisted in the United States Marines on October 6, 1942 and waskilled in the battle for Saipan in the South Pacific Islands, July 10, 1944, atthe age of 21 years, 10 months and 4 days.
The body will arrive in Akron on Burlington train No. 6, Saturday evening,when it will be taken in charge by the Yeamans and GordonMortuary.

Funeral services for Clifford Arthur were held Monday afternoon in the CopeCommunity Church with the Rev. George O. Horn conducting the services. Militaryservices were conducted at the Cope Cemetery.
Clifford Allen Arthur, eldest son of Theodore A. and Katheryn M. Arthur, wasborn September 12, 1922 near Cope, Colorado and was killed on Saipan July 10,1944 in the South Pacific at the age of 2l years, 10 months and 4 days.
He spent most of his life in and around Cope, with the exception of eightwhich he lived with his parents at Brush, Colorado.
He enlisted in the marines October 13, 1942, taking his boot training at SanDiego, California. After two months of training he was sent to Morro Bay,California for guard duty.
He was home on leave in July, 1943, returning to duty at Santa Barbara,California. From there he was sent back to San Diego and left for overseasDecember 22, 1943 where he was assigned to the 2nd Div. of the 2nd Marines.
While the family lived at Brush, Colorado, Clifford became a member of thejunior division of the Methodist Church.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his father and mother, one brother, Melvin,his grandfather, J. E. Nelson of Denver, his grandmother having joined him inthe other world last July 28.
