Note from a former County Coordinator Daniel B Cooley. I am indebted to Linda Berney for discovering that her ancestor Christian Borre was not listed as a Cope postmaster. As it turns out, he was postmaster when Cope was still in Arapahoe County. That lower portion of the county did not become part of Washingtion County until 1903. I have added him now and have modified this listing of postmasters to reflect the county of origin. Observe Akron below which came into existence in 1883 in Weld County Colorado as a railroad construction camp for the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad. The part of present Washington County above the Baseline containing Akron and Otis was cut out of Weld County in 1887.

2. Only those post offices located within the current borders of Washington County are listed. The 1887-1889 "Washington County" post offices located in what is now Yuma County may be found on Steve's list of Yuma County Postmasters.
3. Post office locations on the applications, approvals and appointments are by "legal description." In four cases where the location of the post office is not given on the microfilm I have added footnotes indicating the general location provided by other sources. The location key order is "quarter", section, township and range. Township locations within the county are detailed on the map of Washington County Townships.
4. Many of the post offices listed pre-date the establishment of Washington county from part of what was previously Weld county on February 9, 1887 and the annexation of Arapahoe and Adams county lands on May 12, 1903. This timeline is summarized by township in the table that follows:
Townships | Claimed by County | ||
1N, 2N, 3N, 4N, 5N | Weld Nov 1861 - Feb 1887 |
Washington Since Feb 1887 |
|
1S, 2S, 3S | Arapahoe Nov 1861 - Nov 1902 |
Adams Nov 1902 - May 1903 |
Washington Since May 1903 |
4S, 5S | Arapahoe Nov 1861 - May 1903 |
