High in the Rocky Mountains, the Ute Indians called it Sa-gua-gua-chi-pa, which
means blue earth or water at the blue earth, for the blue clay they found.
Settled in 1599 by discouraged Spanish and then homesteaded in 1865, the first
settlement was on Kerber Creek made up mostly of Civil War veterans. Camps were
built around the mines where lead and silver were discovered.
Saguache, the town, is the county seat and the market and supply center for the
surrounding county. Today, the county is mostly agricultural with very little
mining. Visit Saguache and experience the tranquility and beauty of the
mountains.
