COUNTY
It's name honors President James A. Garfield. But, before it became established, it was home to the Ute Indians until after the Meeker Massacre of 1879. They were then sent to reservations by a treaty in 1880. Glenwood Springs, the County Seat, was previously called Defiance, and it had been founded in 1881. Throughout the county, you will find a variety of communities and towns. Glenwood Springs is famous for its hot springs, but you will also find coal mines, coke ovens, marble mines, as well as farms and ranches. Garfield County has mountainous terrain, valleys, flattops, and waterfalls, as well as an abundance of wildlife. It also contains the site (near Glenwood Springs) of one of the deadliest forest fires in our nation's history, Storm King Mountain, July, 1996. Take a trip to Garfield County, and learn about what it has to offer and even find out about some of the notable personalities that had visited.
