CHEYENNE COUNTY
Several trails passed through Cheyenne County, Colorado. One such trail was the Smoky Hill Trail. Because it was treacherous and it ran through Indian hunting grounds, the trail was also known as the "Starvation Trail". It was travelled by goldseekers, soldiers, and pioneers since it was considered to be the most direct route to Denver. The Butterfield Overland Dispatch was established along this trail. Cheyenne Wells was one of the stage stations which eventually became the county seat. What were the other trails that passed through the area? Was Cheyenne County named for the Cheyenne Indians? Come visit Cheyenne County and find out more about the history of the area.
