James K. Jeffrey, Addresses Genealogy Workshop

James K. Jeffery, was keynote speaker for the genealogy workshop sponsored by Sedgwick County Genealogy Society (SCGS) Saturday, October 16, 1999, at the Julesburg  High School Eastburn  Auditorium.  Despite the chilling weather, the audience “warmed” to his presentations.

Mr. Jeffrey, Collection Specialist in Genealogy at the Denver Public  Library spoke on three topics  during the day long workshop:  Identify Your Revolutionary War Ancestor, Acceptable Proofs for Each Generation, and Supplemental Papers-It’s never too soon to document other Revolutionary Heroes.

James Jeffrey, the past  Colorado State Historian and Registrar of  the Colorado Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), and member of several national Genealogy Societies, captivated his audience of 32 persons from northeastern Colorado and the panhandle of Nebraska by his unique style of sharing stories from his own research personal experiences, and research methodology and resources.
Other sessions led by area genealogists were:  Beginning Genealogy by Jean Williamson, President of the Sedgwick County Genealogy Society; Military Research by Linda Morgan  of Dalton, Nebraska; Finding your Sources and Writing Letters by Yuma Genealogy Society members, Carolyn Ardueser, Sue McCaffery, and Steve Chaplin; Quaker Research by Linda Brandt, SCGS; and Daughters of the American Revolutions Topics, by officers Billi Johnson, Ash Hollow Nebraska Chapter NSDAR, Dorothy Holloway, Ft. Sidney Nebraska Chapter NSDAR,  and NSDAR members at large: Nancy Sauder  and Linda Hartwell. Karen Wolfley, Co-ordinator of the Latter Day Saints Family History Center in Sterling, Colorado was present to answer questions about that facility and the services they provide to genealogists in the area.
In her opening remarks, Registration Chairman Lora Bierman thanked the Superintendent of Schools and other school personnel for being so helpful in co-operating with the needs of the workshop. She also mentioned several organizations in the surrounding area who helped with  publicity including:  Genealogy Societies from Phillips County, East and West Yuma County, Sterling, the NSDAR chapters in Sterling, and Sidney, Nebraska, as well as the Ash Hollow Chapter of Ogallala/Grant, Nebraska who provided many DAR materials for use.
Lunch was served at the school for the participants with table decorations and arrangements by Lucille Metheny and Lois Carlson, SCGS.
Each participant received many handouts to use to improve their Genealogy Research and were able to view a large selection of resources provided by the Denver, and Julesburg Public Libraries as well as the personal libraries of the workshop leaders.
SCGS Newsletters and books were for sale by area authors: Denise Thyne formerly of
Julesburg; Pat Oestman, Wray; and  Linda  Morgan, Dalton, NE, who gave the participants an
understanding of how to write a family history in her closing session titled, "I've Collected All this
Data, Now What?"
