Photo History
CAPTION:
The picture is Watermelon pile at the Rocky Ford (Otero county)
fair grounds. It was taken in the very early 1900's. Watermelons
were given out at noon the first Thursday of September for
perhaps 75 years or more. This was during the Arkansas Valley
Fair which was a prominent event in southeast Colorado.
Watermelon day was instituted in the late 1800's by the local
residents when they held up a passenger train and fed all of the
passengers watermelon.
