CAPTION:
Picture taken ca. 1910, Otero county, CO. Title: Harvesting
cantaloupe seed. The process: The ripe cantaloupes were piled.
The person harvesting the seed had a 4-legged stool which had on
one side a machete-like knife with a rounded end. A cantaloupe
was taken from the pile and with both hands slammed onto the
knife cutting it in half. The seed of each half was scrapped out
with the rounded end of the knife. Below the knife was a bucket
catching the seed. When full, the bucket was emptied into an
oaken barrel (which you do not see in this field).
