Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon for W. C. Heller, resident of Phillips County the past 55 years who died Sunday afternoon, March 1, at his home near Holyoke.

 

The final rites were conducted at 2 o'clock at the First Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. Dayton P. Muxlow, officiating. A male quartet composed of Dr. P. S. Struble, Gene Bennett, G. L. Bereman and Walter G. Sprick sang "My Happy Home", "Remember Me, Almighty One", and "Going Down the Valley." Mrs. P. S. Struble served as accompanist.

 

Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. At the service at the grave, a mixed quartet, members of the choir of the Fairfield Evangelical Covenant church, sang "God Be With You Until We Meet Again." Members of the quartet were Mesdames Gust Anderson and Rickard Roos, and Eph Johnson and Henry Anderson. Pallbearers were Leo Austin, Earl Woodhams, Burl Austin, Clifford Woodhams, William Bailey and Orville Woodhams.

 

Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Bailey and children and Mrs. Don Sunderlin of Englewood, Mrs. Dosha Slife, Mrs. Doris Jonas and son and Pvt. Raymond Heller of Denver, Mrs. Neil Bailey of Brooklyn, New York, Pvt Frank Austin, Jr., of Camp Roberts, California, Mrs. Leatha Holmquist of Byers and Mrs. Vera Holschier and daughters of Fort Logan.

 

William Calvin Heller, son of Peter and Rebecca Heller, was born November 8, 1848 at Cuba, Illinois. At the time of his death he was 93 years, three months and 21 days old. His death, the first in his immediate family, was due to complications of advanced age. He had been in failing health several years, but was bed-fast only two days prior to his death.

 

The marriage of Miss Virginia Gilmore and W. C. Heller was performed April 30, 1876. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Nebraska, where they resided 11 years. Leaving Nebraska, Mr. And Mrs. Heller located in northeastern Colorado. In moving to their homestead near Holyoke, they transported their personal belongings by wagon, as there was no railroad in this section of the state at that time.

 

The late Mr. Heller and his wife celebrated the 64th anniversary of their marriage last April 30 at their home.

 

During his residence in Nebraska, Mr. Heller was a member of the United Brethren church. When he located in Colorado, he affiliated with the Baptist church. He was one of the first members of the First Baptist church of Holyoke, he having transferred his membership to that church soon after it was organized.

 

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Virginia Heller; five daughters, Mrs. W. H. Woodhams and Mrs. Fred A. Woodhams of Haxtun, Mrs. Frank Austin of Ovid, Mrs. George Utesler of Holyoke, and Mrs. Meredith W. Bailey of Englewood; one son , Roy Heller of Holyoke; a brother, John Heller of Toppinish, Washington; 35 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. His parents, three sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
