Wilbur Eugene Burchett of Holyoke was born August 2, 1910 to Claude and Grace Fair Burchett at the home of his grandparents in Amherst. He passed away Saturday, February 27, 1993 at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke at the age of 82.

 

Wilbur was raised on the family homestead 16 miles south of Holyoke. He attended Hillsdale School until the family moved to Holyoke in 1925 and then he continued his education in Holyoke.

 

In 1929, Wilbur started his employment with the Powell and Brethouwer Grocery Store and in 1943 Cody Patrick, Ervin Weber and Wilbur leased the store from Powell and Brethouwer for eight years.

 

He married Mildred Andes on November 26, 1937. They made their home in Holyoke. To this union two daughters were born, Beverly and Judy.

 

In 1952, Wilbur purchased the Amherst Market which he operated for 27 1/2 years until retiring. He continued to make his home in Holyoke. On December 21, 1974 he married Irene Pittsenberger.

 

Wilbur enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a very active member of the Holyoke Gun Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holyoke, Holyoke Lions Club and the Elks Lodge No. 2409 BPOE of Wray. Wilbur joined the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department in 1938 and retired in 1961, serving as chief for part of that time.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, brother Doyle, sister Leona and former wife Mildred.

 

Survivors include daughters Beverly Tumbleson of Longmont and Judy Spelts and husband Ivan of Evergreen; brothers Mack Burchett of Holyoke, Marvin Burchett of Aurora and Lyle Burchett of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; sisters Florence Hayes of Johnson City, Tennessee, Jeanette Denison of Aurora and Delores Sawyer of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren; and two great

grandchildren.

 

Services were scheduled for Wednesday, March 3, 1993 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Holyoke with Rev. Gary Jones officiating. Burial was in Holyoke

Memorial Park.
