Funeral services were held from Zion Lutheran Church, Holyoke, Wednesday, April 5, 1972, for Herbert G. Welper, 71, who passed away Sunday, April 2, at Melissa Memorial Hospital, Holyoke. Rev. James Pomeroy, minister of the church officiated at the services. Interment was in Amherst Cemetery.
Herbert George Welper, son of August and Emma Riesche Welper, was born near Lyons, NE on September 2, 1900. He moved to Colorado with his parents at the age of 16 to a farm near Amherst.
He was united in marriage to Meta Leben on November 2, 1924, at Amherst. To this union three daughters were born. The family made their home at Amherst for many years before moving to Holyoke.
He has been a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Meta; three daughters, Mrs. Merle (Imogene) Pillard, Colorado Springs, Mrs. Kenneth (Marcene) Gardner, Lincoln, NE, Mrs. Leslie (Genevieve) Lutze, Holyoke, nine grandchildren; one great grandson, many other relatives and friends.

META MARTHA (LEBEN) WELPER

Meta Martha Welper of Colorado Springs was born February 17, 1901 in Plainview, Nebraska to Bertha Hinz and Herman Leben Sr. She passed away June 17, 1994 in Colorado Springs at the age of 93.
Meta was baptized in the Lutheran Church and remained a lifelong member of the faith. In 1909 the family moved to a farm two miles east of Amherst where she attended St. Paul's German Parochial School and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church on May 17, 1914.
On November 2, 1924 she was united in marriage to Herbert George Welper of Amherst. They first met in the early 1920s when she worked as a clerk in the Amherst grocery store. To this union three daughters were born. Over the years, the family resided in both Amherst and Holyoke, owning and operating various businesses.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sisters Frieda Harmon and Elizabeth Nierman and brothers Ernst and Walter Leben.
Survivors include daughters Imogene and husband Merle Pillard of Colorado Springs, Genevieve and husband Les Lutze of Holyoke and Marcene Gardner of Lincoln, NE; brother Herman Leben and wife Florence of Holyoke; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were scheduled for Tuesday, June 21, 1994 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst
with Rev. Harold Rathjen and Rev. Gary Rahe officiating. Interment is in the Amherst Cemetery.
