Winnie Travis passed away Thursday, January 3, at St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo. She was 81 years and seven months of age. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Mrs. Travis is survived by her husband, eight children, 21 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Travis was born Winnie Marie Lorenzen in Neleigh, NE on June 6, 1903. Her parents, Hans and Anna Lorenzen, moved with their family to a farm four miles northeast of Imperial, NE in 1906. From that home, Winnie attended rural grade school and Chase County High School in Imperial.

 

After graduating from high school in the class of 1920, Mrs. Travis attended Kearney State Teachers College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to obtain certification as an elementary school teacher. She then taught school for five years, the first two in the rural school she had herself attended as a student and the last three within the Imperial school system.

 

On August 27, 1925, Winnie Marie Lorenzen married Percy Thomas Travis in Venango, NE. To that marriage and its issue she selflessly dedicated the rest of her full and happy life. Percy and Winnie Travis made their home in Imperial and on farms nearby until they moved to a farm 14 miles east southeast of Holyoke in the summer of 1935. That farm has now been their home for 50 years.

 

A deeply religious person, Mrs. Travis grew up a Presbyterian and then joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the late thirties, partaking of the baptism sacrament at the same time as her two oldest sons. Her strong faith carried her and her family through times of trouble as well as times of triumph, and knowledge of that faith greatly eases the family's current grief at her

departure.

 

Mrs. Travis will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her sense of humor, her constant good cheer, her love of poetry, her skill at rhetoric, her lush flower gardens, her ability to discern and create beauty, her charm, her intelligence, her hard work. She was an avid reader and placed the highest priority on the education of her children and grandchildren.

 

Among those who have been most touched and changed and made into what they are by the love and care of Winnie Marie Lorenzen Travis are her children Stanley of Holyoke; Larry of Madison, WI; Edward of Denver; Joyce (Mrs. Clair Weddle) of Lamoni, IA; Karen (Mrs. Robert Trumper) of Holyoke; LaDean (Mrs. Ralph Spinuzzi) of Pueblo; Ronald of Los Angeles, CA; and Dianne (Mrs. Ronald Davis) of Delta, and her 21 grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Travis was active in many organizations including the Eastern Star (of which she was Past Worthy Matron), the PEO Sisterhood, the Delphian Club, the Holyoke Homemakers Home Demonstration Club, the Navy Mothers Club and the Amity Club. Because of Mrs. Travis' lifelong belief in the high value of education, her family has requested that any memorial contributions be made to the Holyoke PEO local scholarship fund. Mrs. Travis was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ann.

 

Mrs. Travis was the source and the center of a large and close family. Through that family, and through the many many others who were fortunate to know her, the love and the goodness of this great lady will live long after her.

 

Services were held January 7, 1985 at the United Methodist Church in Holyoke with Elders Eldon W. Dickens, Sr. and Lorin Draper officiating. Interment was at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
