DOUHAN FINAL RITE HELD AT FAIRFIELD

 

Service for Aged Woman Conducted at Evangelical Covenant Church

 

Final rites were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Evangelical Covenant Church at Fairfield for Mrs. Carl E. Douhan, 87, who died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gust Anderson.

 

Service was held under direction of the pastor, Rev. Arvid E. Nygren. Mesdames Arvid Nygren, Arvid Anderson and Orville Eckman sang with Mrs. Ivan Knode playing the accompaniments. Burial was made in the Fairfield cemetery. The pallbearers were Alfred Berglund, Eph Johnson, Henry Anderson., Arthur Hanson, J.T. Anderson and Charles Anderson.

 

Tora Helena Hallstrom was born March 21, 1854, in Sweden. She was one of a family of eight children of William and Marie Hallstrom. Her early life was spent in her native country. Later, she went to London, where she remained several years. Returning to her homeland, she was married to Carl E. Douhan September 29, 1878. A short time after their marriage, Mr. Douhan entered school to study for the ministry. When ordained, he served his first church in Sweden. She was reared, baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, but was converted and baptized into the doctrine of the Baptist Church following her marriage. During late years, Mrs. Douhan was a member of the Emanuel Baptist Church of Denver.

 

Since the death of her husband at the family home in the Fairfield community four years ago, Mrs. Douhan had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Gust Anderson, and family.

 

She was also preceded in death by four daughters and a son. Two daughters, Tyra and Julia died in infancy in Sweden. Julia Constance died at the age of 19 years at Greeley, and Esther Marie died in Holyoke at the age of 27 years. The son, Fred, expired at the age of 21 years in Norway, Michigan.

 

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Elvera Thompson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mrs. Dora A. Anderson of Fairfield; two sons, Carl J. Douhan of La Grande, Oregon, and William Douhan of Haxtun; five grandchildren, and a number of other relatives.
