HOLYOKE POSTMASTER PASSED AWAY TODAY

Tom H. Hargreaves, prominent citizen of Holyoke and for the past 10 years, postmaster of the local post office, succumbed to a heart attack which started about midnight, causing his death at 5:45 this morning. This news came as a shock to all who knew him. He had been about his duties in the post office this week apparently in fair health although he has at times been under the care of physicians in recent years and has gone through the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota.

Mr. Hargreaves was born in Liverpool, England, and came here with his parents when about a year old. He attended the elementary school here and was graduated from the Phillips County High School. He was also a graduate of Denver University in Denver. Before becoming postmaster, he had been treasurer of Phillips County for 10 years or more.

Funeral arrangements had not been made as the paper went to press this morning.

FINAL RITES HELD SUNDAY FOR T.H. HARGREAVES

Funeral services for Thomas H. Hargreaves were held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock with Rev. Clare J. Hayes, pastor of the church officiating. A quartet composed of Mrs. C. R. Smythe, Mrs. Charles Brown, G.L. Bereman and Walter Sprick, accompanied by Miss Betty Gleason, at the piano, furnished the music.

Pall bearers were J. Harold Ellis, Ralph Anderson, H.J. Hoppler, Harry Colver, Dr. H.C. Hill, and Rex Evans. Holyoke Lodge No. 81 A.F. and A.M. attended the service in a group and committed to body at the cemetery.

Thomas H. Hargreaves, the son of Henry C. and Katharine Hargreaves, was born November 18, 1885 in Liverpool, England and departed this life June 29, 1944 at his home in Holyoke.

He came to this country with his parents, April 9, 1887. The family first came to Julesburg and then directly across to the homestead south of Holyoke.

As a youth, he graduated from the Phillips County High School and the University of Denver where he received the A.B. degree, majoring in mathematics and chemistry. He had always hoped to finish a medical course, but a break in health interceded, making that impossible.

Hearing the call of his christian duty, Mr. Hargreaves united with the Methodist Church at an early age and has been a faithful member of that body since. He was in his usual place in church the last Sunday before his passing.

He was also a member of Holyoke Masonic Lodge No. 81, A.F. and A.M. and of the Modern Woodman of America.

He was united in marriage to Edith Summers December 25, 1910 with Rev. W.D. Waller officiating. To this union were born six daughters.

Thomas Hargreaves had a useful life, much of it serving his fellow men in public office. He served four years as Chief Chemist for the Great Western Sugar Company, he taught school three years, then was on the farm four years, going from there to the County Treasurer’s Office, serving as Treasurer of Phillips County for fourteen years. And he was just beginning his eleventh year as Postmaster of Holyoke when he passed away. He also served on the City Council of Holyoke for several years.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, a half brother, James P. Lynch, who died in 1904, and a brother, George Hargreaves who died December 23, 1943.

Left to feel the loss of this loved one is his devoted wife, Edith, the six daughters, Mrs. Anna Mae Ellis, of Golden, Colorado; Mrs. Katharine Spelts of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Mildred Adamson of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Florence Werner of Holyoke; Mrs. Margaret Wright of Norman, Oklahoma and Mrs. Dorothy Lohmann of Calhan, Colorado. Also two brothers and one sister: John Hargreaves of Holyoke, Frank C. Hargreaves of Mitchell, Nebraska and Mrs. Anna K. Johnson of Greeley, Colorado. These as well as seven grandchildren and a host of other relatives and loyal friends.
