Herman Senstock of Denver, who lived in the Amherst community for many years, passed away Thursday, March 14, at the home of a daughter in Denver following a brief illness. Mr. Senstock celebrated his 100th birthday last fall.
He was remarkably active and alert for his age and was able to be "up and around" most of the time until about a week before his death. He was honored by a large group of relatives and friends at open house at Grace Lutheran Church in Denver on his 100th birthday, October 8, 1967.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst, with Rev. Theodore Schauland, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was at the Amherst Cemetery.
One of a family of nine boys, Mr. Senstock was born at Nuesdorff, Germany. When he was 17 years of age, in 1884, he came to the United States after being encouraged to do so by a brother, Ernest, who had come to this country the previous year.
Soon after arriving in New York, Mr. Senstock went to Nebraska by train. Unable to speak English at first, Herman and Ernest Senstock began farming near Tobias, Nebraska. They resided there for a short time, then moved to a farm near Pierce, Nebraska, and later settled near Friend, Nebraska in 1888.
Herman Senstock was united in marriage to Martha Petau of Friend, Nebraska, in 1889. Thirteen children were born to this union, four of whom survive. After living near Friend for a time, Mr. and Mrs. Senstock, accompanied by Mr. Senstock's brother, moved to a farm near Plainview, Nebraska. They moved to the Amherst, Colorado community in 1910 and made their home in a granary until they could build a house. It was there that Mr. and Mrs. Senstock celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 1914 and their 50th anniversary in 1939.
Mr. Senstock's surviving children are Mrs. Clyde Nelson, already mentioned, and Fred Senstock, both of Denver, Mrs. Fred Bangert, El Paso, Texas, and Arthur Senstock, who lives in California.
