Funeral services were held Saturday, December 1 for J.S. Rouze, 83, pioneer resident of this community since 1914. Mr. Rouze had been in ill health for the past five years, much of this time being unable to leave the house.

He passed away November 29 at the Phillips County Hospital. Last rites were held from the Holyoke Methodist church with Rev. Donald Shaw, minister at the U.E.B. church in Lamar, officiating, assisted by Rev. J. Wilson Branstetter, pastor of the Holyoke Methodist church. Interment was in Pleasant Valley cemetery with the Lewis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

James Samuel Rouze, son of Edward E. and Lydia Marsh Rouze, was born in Tracy, Iowa, June 3, 1873. When Sammy was a small boy he moved with his parents to Indiana but after a few years they returned to Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Mary Hutchinson on November 11, 1900. To this union two children were born, Glenn and Helen, Mrs. Loren Lloyd, both of Holyoke. In 1909 Mr. Rouze and his family moved to Imperial, where they lived until 1914, moving then to a homestead south of Holyoke. In 1927 they moved to their present home, southeast of town.

When a boy he united with the McClintock Methodist church near Tracy and always kept his membership there. He was a faithful attendant and worker in the Pleasant Valley E.U.B. church as long as they had services. He loved the land and was a good farmer, always interested in better livestock and for years raised purebred Herefords. He was one of the founders of the Midwest Hereford association and took an active part in any program for the improvement of agriculture or stock raising.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Glenn, and one daughter, Helen, Mrs. Loren Lloyd; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Cooper, Modesto, California and Mrs. Bertha Loynachan, Adel, Iowa, and one brother, March, of Imperial, Nebraska and two grandchildren.
