JOHN PETAU DIES AT AGE OF NINETY-FOUR YEARS

John Petau died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Kropp, at Amherst at the age of 94 years.

 

The funeral was held Monday, services being conducted by Rev. Otto Hoyer of the Lutheran church at the house and church. Burial was at the Amherst Cemetery.

 

Mr. Petau was born in West Prussia October 28, 1828, and when fourteen was confirmed a member of the Lutheran church. He was married to Friedricka Schnase in May, 1861 and five years later came to the United States with his wife and one child, locating at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

 

The family moved on a farm near Friend, Nebraska, in December, 1873. Here his wife died December 2, 1882, and in 1890, Mr. Petau moved with his children to Plainview, Nebraska. Mr. Petau came to Amherst, July 30, 1908, and since then has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kropp.

 

The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Herman Senstock and Mrs. Kropp of Amherst and Mrs. Edward Thomas of Niobrara, Nebraska, besides twenty-six grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. The eldest daughter, Mrs. Bartels of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away in June 1920.
