P.F. BURGE DIES SUDDENLY FROM HEART FAILURE

 

Had Undergone Operation Monday

 

Local Man Was Apparently Recovering When Death Came Without Warning; Funeral Friday

 

Pearl F. Burge, owner of the Hotel Burge here, died suddenly about five o'clock Tuesday evening from a heart attack in the Holyoke hospital, where he was apparently recovering nicely from an operation performed Monday for obstruction of the bowels. Mr. Burge was taken suddenly ill Sunday afternoon, and was removed Monday to the hospital for observation. The operation was performed that night, and Mr. Burge's condition was considered good following the operation.

 

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church at 1:30 Friday afternoon with Rev. J.W. Bailey, pastor of the church, preaching the sermon. Rev. M.B. Beattie, pastor of the Methodist church, will assist with the services at the church, while the Holyoke Masonic lodge of which Mr. Burge was a member will have charge of the services at the grave.

 

Mr. Burge had owned and managed the hotel for about 11 years, having taken over the management during the spring of 1922. It became a popular place for the traveling public and traveling men often drove many miles merely to spend the night at the local hotel. Several years ago Mr. Burge erected a fireplace in the lobby of the hotel, dedicated to the "Knights of the Grip." The place was built from stones and relics gathered by the traveling public from all over the United States and many foreign countries, and carried a large plaque with the names of many of the donors. It attracted attention all over the country, and pictures of the place appeared in syndicated features in many dailies and magazines.

 

Mr. Burge, together with his wife, who died June 8, 1932, came to Holyoke in 1915 and purchased a mercantile store here, disposing of it a few years before they entered the hotel business.

 

Mr. Burge was born at Gravity, Iowa, April 15, 1877 and received his early education there. In 1894 he located in Alvin, Texas, where he managed a general store for three years, and then went to Purdy, Missouri, where he and his brother, Henry, conducted a dry goods store.

 

Mr. Burge was married to Jett Harris at Fayetteville, Arkansas, June 27, 1900 and the couple moved to Conway, Iowa in 1902. Later Mr. Burge sold his interest and moved to Long Beach, California, and then returned to Sharpsburg, Iowa in 1910 and operated a store until 1914, when Mr. Burge went into the real estate business in Creston, Iowa, from which place he and his wife came to Holyoke.

 

Mr. Burge served for several years as a member of the town board, and was also secretary-manager of the local telephone company for many years.

 

Surviving Mr. Burge are two sisters, Mrs. M.E. Dunlavy of Sterling, and Mrs. Martha McGee of Nemo, South Dakota, and three brothers, Henry of Conway, Iowa, Harlan of Gering, Nebraska and Chauncey of Long Beach, California, besides several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Baptist church for P.F. Burge, owner of the Hotel Burge, who died Tuesday of last week. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.W. Bailey, pastor of the church, who was assisted by Rev. M.B. Beattie, pastor of the Methodist church. The local Masonic lodge of which Mr. Burge was a member had charge of the services at the grave.

 

Surviving Mr. Burge are three brothers, Henry of Conway, Iowa, Harlan of Gering, Nebraska, and Chauncey of Long Beach, California, and two sisters, Mrs. M.E. Dunlavy of Sterling, and Mrs. Martha McGee of Nemo, South Dakota. Mrs. Burge died two years ago.
