DOROTHY LUELLA( NIERMAN) MEINTE

Dorothy Luella Meinte, 82, died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver. She was born March 25, 1925 on the family farm south of Amherst to Otto C. and Elizabeth (Leben) Nierman. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst.

 

Dorothy attended school at St. Paul’s Parochial, Amherst Public and graduated from Phillips County High School as the class salutatorian. On August 24, 1947 Dorothy married Vernell K. Meinte at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst. They made their home in Amherst for over 55 years, where they had three children: Myron, Michele and Melinda, and later adopted a daughter Roxanne.

 

Dorothy experienced a variety of jobs which included operating an elevator, working in the county clerk’s office, selling Minnesota Woolen clothing, being a rural mail carrier and writing the Amherst news for The Holyoke Enterprise.

 

She held several offices in the local and zone level of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also involved in the Amicus Federated Club and the VFW Auxiliary. Dorothy also volunteered her time at the North Platte Canteen during World War II.

 

She enjoyed playing on a softball team, a bowling league and was in many card clubs. Dorothy loved doing needlepoint until she lost her eyesight. Television game shows were a favorite part of each day, especially Jeopardy.

 

Dorothy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church all her life. She was active in ladies groups, AAL and taught Sunday School for many years.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Vernell; her parents; and her brother, Ray Nierman.

 

Survivors include son Myron and wife Margie Meinte of Houston, Texas; daughters Michele and husband Bruce Yowell of Strasburg, Malinda and husband Jim Paloucek of North Platte; great grandchild Brianna Meinte of Houston; sisters Lucille Krueger of Hastings, Nebraska, Frances and husband Bill Watson of Fort Collins and Eileen and husband Jack Turner of Casper, Wyoming; brother Wesley and wife Eunice Nierman of Fort Collins; sisters-in-law Ida Nierman of Lakewood and Yvonne and husband Boyce Wernet of Holyoke; brother-in-law Duane and wife Lorna Meinte of Holyoke; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral service was held January 5 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst with Pastor

Al Borcher officiating. Interment followed at the Amherst Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, c/o St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Amherst, CO

VERNELL KENNETH MEINTE

Vernell Kenneth Meinte, 80, of Holyoke, died September 13, 2006 in North Platte, Nebraska. He was born November 5, 1925, in Blue Hill, Nebraska to Martin Meinte and Hattie Krueger Meinte. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. Meinte was raised on a farm near Blue Hill and moved to Colorado when he was 16.

 

Meinte enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 4, 1943, and served in Okinawa and occupied Japan during WWII. He returned to Amherst in April of 1946. On August 24, 1947, Vernell married Dorothy Nierman at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst. They had three children, Myron, Michele and Malinda, and adopted a daughter, Roxanne.

 

Meinte became manager of the Amherst Coop Oil Co. in 1947 and served in that position for 27 years. In 1974 he became manager of the Amherst Coop Elevator Inc. - Lamar Branch. Upon retirement he volunteered at the Julesburg Welcome Center.

 

He enjoyed baseball, softball, bowling, hunting, fishing, camping and golfing. He and Dorothy belonged to many card clubs and enjoyed socializing with many friends. All of these activities were especially enjoyed when shared with family and friends.

 

He was a charter member of the Amherst Fire Department and served as the captain of the State Championship Racing team. Meinte was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday school teacher, elder and trustee. He served on the Holyoke Re-1J school board,

Community Federal Credit Union Board, and was an active member of VFW Post #6482 and American Legion Post #90. Meinte was proud to receive his high school diploma through the Veterans Honorary Diploma Program in 2003.

 

Meinte is survived by his wife Dorothy; son Myron and his wife Margie of Houston, Texas; daughters Michele Yowell and husband Bruce of Strasburg, Malinda Paloucek and husband Jim of North Platte, Nebraska and Roxanne Dinsmore and husband Harvey of Lincoln City, Oregon; grandchildren Kim and Mat Meinte of Houston, Andrew and Alex Yowell of Strasburg and Katie, Erin, Dylan and Jackie Paloucek of North Platte; and great granddaughter Brianna Meinte of Houston.  Also sister Yvonne Wernet and her husband Boyce of Holyoke; brother Duane Meinte and his wife Lorna of Holyoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Keith Meinte.

 

Funeral services were held Monday, September 18, 2006 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst, with Pastor Al Borcher officiating. Internment followed at Amherst Cemetery.
