Letta Cordelia Kerchner Hansen of Holyoke was born November 9, 1903 to Lewis and Bertha Graybill Kerchner in Logan, Iowa. She passed away at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke December 27, 1993 at the age of 90.

 

Letta was the second oldest of five children. She had lived in Logan, Iowa; Kansas; Elgin and Clay Center, Nebraska; Amherst and Holyoke.

 

She graduated from Phillips County High School in 1923. From 1923 to 1929 Letta taught school or went to Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, receiving her B.A. degree in August of 1929.

 

On June 2, 1929 she and Elmer Hansen were married. They lived in Amherst. In 1937, they moved to Holyoke. Letta taught school for 18 years. During her marriage, two children were born, a son Gordon and a daughter Lorna.

 

Letta had been Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star from 1960 to 1961. She had been Oracle and was Recorder for several years in Royal Neighbors of America. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Besides being a loving, caring and supportive mother and grandmother, she loved flowers and gardening.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents Lewis and Bertha Kerchner; husband Elmer; brothers Harold and Donald Kerchner; and sister Lillie Lee.

 

Survivors include son Gordon of California; daughter Lorna Charles of Holyoke; sister Frances Runge of Holyoke; three grandsons; and other nieces and nephews.

 

Services were held Thursday, December 30, 1993 at First United Methodist Church in Holyoke with Rev. Jack Pedotto officiating.
