Florence Lydia Brase Leben of Holyoke was born September 3, 1910 in Ruskin, Nebraska the fourth of five children of Ernst [F.J.] and Lydia Rodenburg Brase. She departed this life on October 30, 1996 at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke at the age of 86.
Florence was baptized September 18, 1910 at the Lutheran Church in Ruskin. The Brase family moved to Amherst in 1923. She was confirmed on May 19, 1924 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst. As a young woman, Florence worked for several families in the area, taking care of their homes and families.
On September 12, 1928 she was united in marriage to Herman Leben at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst. To this union four children were born: Lois, Gordon, Kenneth and Karen. Two of the children, Lois and Kenneth, died in infancy. Herman and Florence were married for 68 years.
In 1960 Florence and Herman moved to Holyoke to live, but they continued to farm in the Amherst area. In 1992 Florence entered Prairie Vista Care Center because of physical disabilities that required special care.
Throughout the years, Florence could be found at school events watching the children play sports and perform in plays and musicals. In the summer, her car was usually parked at the ball field where she would spend the day watching ball games from the peewees to adults.
When Florence could no longer attend events, she enjoyed being kept informed on local happenings by the staff at Prairie Vista. Herman and Florence attended the University of Colorado Buffalo footballs games for 15 years and missed only a couple in all that time.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke where she was active in the Ladies Aid and Women of Zion. She also served many years as a Vacation Bible School teacher. She supported the Good Shepherd Home of the West for many years.
Preceding her in death were two children, her parents, and brothers Clarence and Arnold Brase.
Survivors include husband Herman of Holyoke; children Gordon Leben and wife Winona of Amherst and Karen Stone and husband Dale of Evans; grandchildren Les Leben of Littleton, Bob and Megan Leben of Boulder, Nunzy and Bruce Alves of New Braunfels, Texas, Kevin and Dawn Leben of Mesa, Arizona, Joe Stoner of San Francisco, California and Kay and Kevin Riley of Boulder; six great grandchildren; sisters Esther Sagehorn and Gladys Willmon of Holyoke; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, November 2, 1996 at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke with Rev. Gary Rahe officiating. Interment was made at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Amherst.

Amherst Man Dies Suddenly
Herman Leben, Long Time Citizen Of Amherst Expires From Heart Trouble
Herman Leben, Sr., a well-known citizen of this community died suddenly at the home of his son, H.A. Leben Monday morning at 10 o'clock, of a heart attack which came while he was standing outside the house talking to his grandson, Gordon Leben.
Mr. Leben was one of the oldest citizens of this community and he and his family were one of the first to come to this community moving here in the year 1909, and living on the farm place two miles east of town for several years. Then in later years the family moved to town, where they have lived since.
On December 30, 1895, he was united in marriage to Bertha Hinz at Plainview, Nebraska. Those surviving are his wife, two sons, three daughters, one brother, Fred of Loveland, thirteen grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. One son preceded him in death a few years ago.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rev. W.W. Wilk officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery.

OBITUARY
Herman Leben, Sr., son of Fritz Leben and his wife, Wilhemina Ziegfeld, was born on July 22, 1868, at Haruskrug Pommern, Germany. He was made a child of God when he was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost in his infancy. When he was 18 years old he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He came to America on or about August 31, 1893, locating at Plainview, Nebraska. It was there that he was united in holy wedlock to Bertha Hinz December 30, 1895. This union was blessed with three sons and three daughters.
Mr. Leben and his family left Plainview in March, 1909, coming to Amherst, where their home was made ever since. The Lord called him to his eternal home on May 6, at 9:30 a.m. having reached the age of 66 years, 9 months and 14 days. The cause of his death being a stroke of the heart. He leaves to mourn his departure, his widow, two sons, Walter and Herman, Jr., three daughters, Mrs. Otto Nierman, Mrs. Herb Welper and Frieda Leben, one brother, Fred Leben, at Loveland, Colorado, also two brothers and two sisters in Germany, 13 grandchildren and other relatives in Colorado and Nebraska. His son, Ernest, preceded him in death several years ago, his father likewise in 1924 and his mother in 1908.

MENINGITIS VICTIM BURIED AT AMHERST
Eight-Month-Old Daughter of Herman Leben Dies After Brief Illness
Private funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Herman Leben home in Amherst for Lois Leben, eight-month-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Leben who died from spinal meningitis Friday. Due to the nature of the disease no public funeral was permissible. Rev. W.W. Wilk officiated and Colver Brothers were in charge. Burial was in the Amherst Cemetery.
Lois was born July 14, 1929 and died at the age of eight months. She was stricken with the dreaded disease on Monday and death came to her four days later.
The funeral services were held on the porch of the home and quite a number of relatives and friends gathered in the yard in an effort to express their sympathy for the bereaved family. No other cases have been reported in Amherst and none are expected. Every possible precaution has been taken to avoid any possible spread of the disease.
