AMHERST BOY SHOOTS SELF ACCIDENTALLY
Body of Melvin Jung Is Found In Field after Search
His forehead pierced by a .22 rifle bullet, Melvin Herbert Jung, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Jung of near Amherst, was found dead a scant half mile east of his home Saturday evening, after he had been out hunting alone Saturday afternoon.
The boy, in the habit of taking hunting excursions quite frequently, left home shortly after noon Saturday, and nothing was thought of it by his family until he failed to return at about chore time as he usually did. However, they did not become alarmed immediately, but finally started a search for Melvin. The help of neighbors was soon enlisted as the search continued, and cars as well as persons afoot soon overran the surrounding fields. The body was found at about 8 o'clock or shortly after.
Since the death was a violent one, Coroner Harry B. Radford of Haxtun was called, and he determined the cause as accidental gun shot. No inquest was deemed necessary by him. In some manner the gun was discharged, the bullet entering the center of the forehead, no doubt causing almost instant death, the coroner stated. He brought the body to Holyoke after his examination and turned it over to the Colver funeral home.
Funeral services were held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Amherst at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon following brief services at the Jung home a half hour earlier. Rev. W.W. Wilk pastor of the Amherst Church, officiated. Interment was in the Amherst cemetery.
Melvin was born on July 6, 1920, at Amherst. He was a graduate from the Amherst grade school. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Claude and Leonard, and two sisters, Marie and Lorraine, as well as other relatives. One sister, Roma, preceded him in death March 29, 1933.
