CLAUDE A. JUNG

Claude A. Jung of Holyoke was born January 25, 1916 near Amherst to Herbert H. and Blanche Aird Jung. He passed away Thursday, August 3, 1995 at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke at the age of 79.

 

Claude was baptized February 27, 1916 and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Amherst. He was an active, lifetime member of St. Paul's. On September 21, 1938 he married Dorothy Isaacson at St. Paul's. To this union one daughter was born.

 

Jung farmed through the years until he retired. He was also an electrician and he wired some of the first homes to get electricity in the community. Later he worked as a television serviceman when television became available in the area.

 

As an active member of the community, Claude served on many boards during his lifetime. He was actively involved in starting the Amherst Fire Department and was a member until his retirement. He also helped to begin the lighted Amherst baseball field. He managed the Amherst baseball team for many years. He was an original member of the Phillips County Planning Commission. He served 20 years on the ASCS Phillips County Committee. Claude and Dorothy built a new home and moved to Holyoke in 1984. They also spent the winter months for 20 years at a home in Arizona.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters Roma Jung and Lorraine Jung Schmitt, brother Melvin Jung and a great granddaughter.

 

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of the family home in Holyoke; daughter Gloria Collins and husband Charles of Fort Collins; sister Marie Millikin and husband Jarvis of Brule, Nebraska; brother Leonard (John) Jung and wife Mary of Holyoke; grandchildren Mark Collins and Christie Collins of Fort Collins; sister-in-law Dorothy Isaacson of Haxtun; brother-in-law Dave Isaacson and wife Wynette of Florida and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Services were held Monday, August 7, 1995 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst with Pastor Harold Rathjen officiating. Interment followed in the Amherst Cemetery.

 

 

 

 

CONRAD JUNG

CONRAD JUNG, 88, FORMER AMHERST POSTMASTER, DIES

 

Conrad Jung, longtime postmaster at Amherst, died Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. R.J. Koeneke, in Brighton. He was 88 years old.

 

A prayer service was held Tuesday morning at the Rice funeral chapel in Brighton and memorial services were conducted at 3:00 o'clock that afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Amherst. Rev. Charles Wedig, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton, was in charge. Burial was in the Amherst Cemetery.

 

Mr. Jung, a son of Ludwig and Katherine Jung, was born April 15, 1864, at Collinsville, Illinois. He was baptized and confirmed in Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville, where his father was a teacher.

 

On April 18, 1892, Mr. Jung was united in marriage with Maria Schnase at Friend, Nebraska. Four children were born to them, Carl Jung, Holyoke; Herbert Jung, Amherst; Mrs. Helen Timmerman, Brighton, and Mrs. Koeneke, Brighton, who has been mentioned.

 

In 1910 Mr. Jung brought his family to Amherst from Nebraska. He was postmaster at Amherst for 25 years, retiring in 1940. Since the death of Mrs. Jung on February 13, 1941, Mr. Jung had made his home with his children.

 

Besides the children who have been mentioned, Mr. Jung is survived by a brother, Adolph Jung, St. Louis, Missouri, and 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Six grandsons served as pallbearers. Many relatives came from a distance to attend the funeral.

 

 

HERBERT H. JUNG

Herbert H. Jung, the son of Conrad and Mary Schnase Jung, was born February 21, 1893, at Cordova, Nebraska.

 

He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Cordova on April 12, 1908. In 1910, he moved to Amherst with his parents and was united in marriage to Blanch Aird on March 24, 1915.

 

To this union six children were born: Claude and Leonard Jung, Amherst; Mrs. Marie Millikin, Brule, Nebraska; Mrs. Lorraine Smith, Wray, and Roma and Melvin, who preceded their father in death.

 

Mr. Jung resided at Amherst from 1910 to 1953 with the exception of one year at Prospect, Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. Jung moved to Holyoke in 1953. Mr. Jung became ill on August 22 and was taken to the Phillips County Hospital the following day. He passed away early on the morning of August 24.

 

Surviving are his wife and the children already mentioned; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Koeneke, Brighton, Colorado, and Mrs. Helen Timmerman, Hudson, Colorado; one brother, Carl Jung, Holyoke; and eight grandchildren.
