FUNERAL HELD FOR MRS. JULIA BROPHY

 

Pioneer Resident of Northeastern Colorado Dies in Chicago

 

Funeral services were conducted in Holyoke Monday morning for Mrs. Julia Agnes Brophy, resident of northeastern Colorado 47 years, who died Saturday morning at the home of her son, Stephen Brophy, in Chicago, Illinois. Death was due to heart ailment and complications of advanced age.

 

A requiem mass was read at 10 o'clock at the St. Patrick Church with the rector, Rev. Francis J. Brady, officiating. Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. Six sons, Joseph, Peter, Michael, Stephen, James and Edward, served as the pallbearers.

 

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Fred Lagler and son, John of Thurman, Daniel Brophy of Oakland, California, Stephen Brophy of Chicago, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Brophy and children of Roseland, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Crow of Colorado Springs, and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Casey, Miss Agnes Brophy and John Brophy of Denver.

 

Julia Agnes Muldowney, daughter of Patrick and Julia Muldowney, was born March 25, 1865 at Frisford in Kilkenny County, Ireland. She immigrated to America in 1882, settling at Weston, Iowa. She was united in marriage to James P. Brophy, Sr., July 13, 1884, at Weston, Iowa. The couple left Iowa in 1886 and moved to Colorado and located on a tree claim south of Haxtun, where they lived until the year, 1893, when they moved to Colorado Springs. Returning to northeastern Colorado in 1904, Mr. and Mrs. Brophy located on a homestead southwest of Holyoke. Three years later, they moved to a homestead in Yuma County. Mrs. Brophy went to Chicago, Illinois seven years ago and had since that time made her home with her son, Stephen Brophy.

 

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Fred Lagler of Thurman; seven sons, Stephen of Chicago, Illinois, Dan of Oakland, California, Michael of Roseland, Nebraska, and James, Joseph, Peter and Edward all of Yuma County; 42 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one brother and a sister, who live in Ireland.
