Final Rites For J.H. Conklin Will Be Conducted This Afternoon

 

Funeral services will be conducted in Holyoke this afternoon for J.H. Conklin, 60, a pioneer resident of Phillips County, who died at his home on Monday evening following a lingering illness.

 

Prayer will be read at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray C. Miell at 1:30 o'clock and service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Holyoke Cemetery.

 

The late Mr. Conklin had been in failing health several months. He died at 7 o'clock Monday evening with all members of the family at his bedside. At the time of his death, he was 60 years, five months and five days old.

 

Mr. Conklin was born March 3, 1878 in Canton, Jackson County, Iowa. He was a son of James W. Conklin and Mary A. Preston and was one of a family of 11 children. His early childhood was spent near Odebolt, Iowa. In the year of 1896, the family moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa, where they lived one year, moving then to St. James, Minnesota, where they established residence one year.

 

In August, 1898, the Conklin family left Iowa and moved to Colorado, locating on a homestead in Phillips County. Since that time, the late Mr. Conklin had resided continuously in Phillips County, with the exception of two years, which he spent in Denver.

 

During the first year that he lived in Colorado, he was employed as a fireman with the railroad company. In 1899, he took a homestead southeast of Holyoke. He resided on this place until the year of 1915, when he sold his farm place and moved into Holyoke, where he established a residence. During the time that he homesteaded and farmed, he was engaged part time in his trade, that of a carpenter. He followed the carpenter trade continuously after he retired from active farm life.

 

The marriage of John Harvey Conklin and Miss Jennie Helland was solemnized in Holyoke December 8, 1904. To this union, three children were born, all of whom survive.

 

Deceased was an honorary member of the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Holyoke Odd Fellows lodge, the Modern Woodmen of America camp, Holyoke Home Guards and the Christian Church.

 

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Jennie Conklin; three daughters, Mrs. Pat Benson (Lena); Mrs. Ray C. Miell (Pauline), and Miss Frances Conklin, all of Holyoke; one grandson, Lyle Miell, two brothers, George Conklin of Holyoke and Fred Conklin of Dayton, Oregon; and four sisters, Mrs. N.J. Show, Mrs. W.A. White, Sr., and Mrs. Edith Kinch of Holyoke and Mrs. D.L. Harmon of Steamboat Springs. Four brothers preceded him in death, they having died in infancy.

Fire Department Members Served As Active And Honorary Pallbearers

 

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday afternoon for J.H. Conklin, 60, resident of Phillips County 40 years, who died at his home Monday evening, August 8, following a lingering illness.

 

Prayer was read at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray C. Miell at 1:30 o'clock and services was conducted at the First Baptist church at 2 o'clock with Rev. Rachel B. Boast of Minatare, Nebraska, officiating. Interment was made in the Holyoke cemetery.

 

Active and honorary members of the Holyoke Volunteer Fire department served as pallbearers and ushers and provided automobiles for transportation. Active pallbearers were Ira Kepler, J.W. McBride, Walter Lutze, Walter H. Sagehorn, Leland Nelson and Francis B. Flanagan. Serving as the honorary pallbearers were F.A. Hethcote, Fred Peterson, John Zeiler, E.W. Lindberg, Clarence Kuhnke and Henry T. Gassert.

 

Ushers were Milo Kepler, George A. Barker and Glen Stenson. In charge of the transportation were Mack Burchett, Junior Watson, Clarence Smith, George Kramer and Fred Lutze.

 

Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. D.L. Harmon of Steamboat Springs, a sister of the deceased, and Mrs. Lydia Sederburg of Denver, a sister of Mrs. Conklin.
