SERVICES HELD FOR PAOLI RESIDENT

 

Funeral services for Rev. Herman C. Elfeldt, 87, longtime resident of Paoli, were conducted last Sunday afternoon, July 24, at the Methodist church of Paoli. Rev. V.D. Morrison of Paoli was in charge of the services and was assisted by Rev. Louis A. Haruf of Holyoke.

 

Rev. Elfeldt died Wednesday evening in the Holyoke Hospital after an illness of 17 days. He had resided in Paoli for 31 years.

 

Herman Christian Elfeldt was born April 15, 1862 at Clayton County, Iowa. He passed away on July 20, 1949 at the age of 87 years.

 

As a child he lived in Minnesota with his parents. The family moved to Lancaster County, Nebraska on June 2, 1868 where his youth was spent on a farm.

 

At a camp meeting at Kramer, Nebraska he was converted and soon felt the call to the ministry. He attended the Congregational Seminary at Crete, Nebraska and later attended the college at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

 

He received his exhorters license in 1881 and his local preachers license in 1883, from the Kramer quarterly conference. He was recommended to be accepted on trial in the West German conference at St. Joseph, Missouri and was ordained deacon in 1884 and became a member of the conference the following year. He received his Elders Orders in September of 1887, and served the following charges: St. Paul, Grand Island and Greeley County, Nebraska, a circuit of seven preaching points, St. James and Creighton Mission from 1886 to 1888, Berlin, Nebraska, Waco and Seward, Nebraska, Papillion, Nebraska, Wathena, Kansas, Denver, Colorado, Woodbine, Kansas and Paoli.

 

He was appointed to serve on the retired minister’s fund board, during which time he resided at Lincoln, Nebraska.

 

In the fall of 1918 he was sent to Paoli to organize a new church. He was a member of the west German conference for 34 years and upon the merger of the German and English conferences he was transferred to the Colorado conference, in which he served for nine years. He retired in 1927 and with his family made his home in Greeley, Colorado for a number of years, later moving to Paoli where he resided until his death.

 

During his ministry he built 13 churches and parsonages and left every charge free of debt.

 

He was married to Miss Annie Dietz at Firth, Nebraska, November 24, 1885, and to this union two children were born, Myrtle and Mrs. Lillian Lohn, both of Paoli. He is also survived by one grandson, Noel of Paoli, and one brother, August of Greeley. His wife preceded him in death on July 19, 1940.

 

Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Radford Funeral home of Haxtun. Burial was made in the Holyoke Memorial Park.
