PHILLIPS COUNTY
Colorado
Kate C. "Fletcher" Edwards
Birth: 1860
Death: 1942
As a child, Kate migrated west with her family to Kansas in the early 1880s. The drought conditions and grasshopper plagues discouraged the family and they returned to Iowa. Undaunted, Kate returned to the west with friends in a covered wagon.
Settling in Phillips County, Kate homesteaded on the land that would become the site of Haxtun. She later sold her land for a fancy price to the Lincoln Land Company, when the railroad was building toward Haxtun. She bought a homestead about six miles northeast of town, and built a fine ranch.
Albert Edwards arrived in the Haxtun area in 1891. He homesteaded some seven miles northeast of Haxtun. He supplemented his income by logging in the Colorado mountains.
In January 1894, Albert Edwards and Kate Fletcher were married. The two joined their homesteads which became one of the foremost ranching operations in the area.
