Pioneer Had Been Suffering for 2 Year, He was 74 Years Old
Funeral services were held at the family home here Wednesday afternoon for Carl Eichele, 74, Phillips County pioneer, who died Tuesday afternoon at the Holyoke hospital from hardening of the arteries. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.W. Bailey, pastor of the Holyoke Baptist church, and the body was buried in the State Line Cemetery, southeast of Holyoke.
Mr. Eichele had been in ill health for the past two years, and last year had one of his legs amputated and the other one a short time ago. Mr. Eichele had been a resident of Phillips County for 41 years. Born in Schanburg, Germany, July 10, 1860, he was left an orphan together with his brother, at the age of six.
He received a common school education and served for three years in the German army. Later he took up farming which occupation he followed throughout his life. In 1885 he came to America, settled at Denver, Colorado and was married there to Minnie Schwab April 19, 1890.
Three year later they moved to Phillips County, where they homesteaded six miles east and two miles north of Holyoke, residing there until 14 years ago when they moved to Holyoke. Mr. Eichele was confirmed in the Lutheran church at the age of 18, and later became a member of the Methodist church in Holyoke.
Left to mourn are the widow, two sons and one daughter, Mrs. Carl Radtke, and Otto and William, besides seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
