FUNERAL SERVICES FOR CLAUS JOHNSON HELD THURSDAY AFTERNOON

 

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon from the Church of the Brethren for Claus Fredrick Johnson, old-time resident and pioneer of the Haxtun community. Rev. Ralph W. Anderson officiated at the service.

 

Music was furnished by Mrs. Grace E. Crist, Organist, and a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Merl Koch, Damon Koch and Mrs. E.J. Witt. Pallbearers were S.J. Meakins, Oscar Hedstrom, L.L. Baker, J.A. Sand, Harold Pond and Roy Olson. Concluding service and burial was at the Haxtun cemetery.

 

Claus Fredrick Johnson, a resident of this community for 72 years, passed away at the local hospital Monday, August 22, 1955 after being ill for one year and confined in the hospital for the past six weeks.

 

Mr. Johnson, who was 93 years, one month and four days old at the time of his death, came to Haxtun during the pioneer days. He was instrumental in helping to build the railroad through Haxtun and also endured many of the hardships of the early settlers. There were few roads and many of the times, he walked across the prairie to Julesburg and Sterling for supplies.

 

Claus Johnson, the youngest son of John and Annie Samolson, was born in Gunnarshult, Sweden on July 18, 1862 and came to America in 1877 as a young boy, settling in Red Oak, Iowa with his family until manhood. He married Anna Lewin, who after five years passed away. To this union were born two sons, Harry and Edwin.

 

Coming to Colorado, he homesteaded a tree claim, three miles southwest of Paoli. He united in marriage with Alma Alfreda Carlson in 1899, and to this union were born five children, of whom two daughters Martha and Helen, preceded him in death.

 

In 1910 he moved to one mile east of Haxtun, where he farmed for many years until retirement. He helped build the Swedish Lutheran church of which he was a charter member.

 

Mr. Johnson has always been a kind and loving father and grandfather being highly respected by the community and leaving behind a large circle of friends.

 

He leaves to mourn, two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Hanes and Edna Johnson of Haxtun, three sons, Robert of Haxtun, Harry of Aurora and Edwin of Pueblo; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers and three sisters.

 

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Ralph W. Anderson, at the Church of the Brethren with interment in the Haxtun cemetery.
