Agnes Christina(Hansen)Donnelly- Hargreaves- Critchlow was born Sept 3, 1899, in Pierce County, NE to Ole and Metha Dinnsen Hansen. She passed away Saturday, Oct 5, 1991, at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke at the age of 92.
The Hansen family moved to Brunswick, NE when Agnes was a young child. They came to the Holyoke area in 1908 from Brunswick. Agnes' father came first to a farm eight miles northeast of Holyoke where he started construction on some buildings for their new farm. Mrs. Hansen and the children came west later by train.
Agnes had started school in Brunswick and continued her schooling in Colorado at a country school on the corner of the section of land where they lived.
She began working as a hired girl when she finished grade school. She worked in many homes in the community and helped women when their babies were born. She also worked at two general stores in Amherst. The first store was owned by John Weyert.
She married Roy Earl Donnelly in July of 1918. They lived in Vona for a period of time Agnes baked angel food cakes for a home bakery operated by Roy's parents. They were later divorced. She lived in Goodland, KS for a time, where she worked in a cafe and also did laundry for the manager of the hotel.
On December 31, 1923, she married George Hargreaves in Sterling. They made their home on a farm five and one-half miles south of Holyoke. George died in 1943. Agnes continued to live on the farm.
She married Cecil Critchlow in August of 1947. After his death in 1960, she continued to make her home on the farm until moving to Holyoke in 1988.
Survivors include sons LaVerne A. Donnelly and wife Lucille of Tucson, AZ, G. Willis Hargreaves and wife Maxine of Walla Walla, WA and Wilbur M. Hargreaves and wife Vera of Hope Well, OH; daughters-in-law Millie Hargreaves of Haxtun and Carol Hargreaves of Athena, OR; 12 grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, sons L. Wayne, Robert L. and James Russell; brother Elmer; sister Melvina; a grandson and a great grandson.
Graveside services and burial were held Wednesday, October 9, at Holyoke Memorial Park with Pastor George Sherbondy officiating.
