Commissioner Cases at Morgan Next Week
Attorney J. M. Taylor of Denver advises us that the several cases against
Buckmmaster and Evans are called for hearing at Fort Morgan on next Tuesday. At
least two of these cases will be tried. These cases were brought by members of
the Taxpayer's Committee several months ago. They were first brought in the
District Court of Washington county and transferred to Morgan county on a change
of venue. The last time the cases were called for trial, the case was halted on
account of the refusal of County clerk Cummings to take certain records from
Washington county for the trial. Later the Supreme Court prohibited Judge
Stephenson from proceeding with his order against Cummings. Since that time
copies of certain records have been obtained and Attorney Taylor now announces
that he has sufficient records to prove the cases of the Taxpayers against
Buckmaster and Evans. Two of the cases charge Buckmaster and Evans with drawing
down money in excess of the salary. Two of the cases charge the spending of more
than $100,000.00 in money in excess of lawful appropriations. In the complaints
it is charged that the commissioners are each liable for more than $200,000.00
for money expended in excess of the annual appropriations. Judge Munson will
preside at the trials.
