September 1891 "Sterling has a new paper. It is called the Independent and will be
conducted in the interests of the Alliance. R. P. Addis is publisher and
J. W. Roland is manager. Its editorial staff is not given but we suppose the bright lights
of the party will be regular contributors. With the grangers behind the new venture its
advertising columns should pay. We should even expect to see Jud Brush advertising his
steers upon its pages. Nothing like keeping solid with the farmers."

December 1907 " Miss Garnet Roland came home from Greeley last Saturday to spend the holiday vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W Roland."
January 1909 "One of the most enjoyable social events of the winter was the marriage
of Miss Garnet Roland and Mr. Walter Gettman Farrell, which occurred at the residence of W. J. Powell
Wednesday evening, Jan. 6, at 7 o'clock, Rev. H. H. Clements ,of the Episcopal church of Fort Morgan,
officiating. The bridesmaids were Miss Lilian Wisley and Miss Margaret Ayers.
The groomsmen were Messrs. Forest Felkner and Will Alexander.
The bride was handsomely gowned and the orange blossom ornaments worn in her hair were
heirlooms worn by her mother at her marriage. The rooms were beautifully decorated with orange
blossoms and smilax. More than one hundred guests were present. A splendid supper followed the wedding ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Roland and is one of Sterling's fairest daughters.
Mr. Farrell is a pharmacist at the Bauman & Davis drug store and is a young man well worthy the affections
of his estimable bride. Mr. and Mrs. Farrell left after the ceremony for a visit with his parents at
Columbus, Kan. They will be at home in Sterling after January 20th."

March 1910 Sterling "J. W. Roland left this morning for Portland, Seattle and other points on
the Pacific coast to be gone for some several weeks. If satisfied with that
section of the country he will determine upon a location to where he intends removing his family."
Paonia, Colorado, April 1911 "J. W. Roland and wife of Sterling, Colorado stopped over here last week on their return from California to look at a tract of land which they are considering buying."
November 1922 "Mrs. John Roland, a pioneer citizen of Sterling, died Sunday at her home in Alhambra. Calif.,
at the age of about 70 years, according to word received by Mrs. H. B. Davis of Sterling, a cousin to
Mrs. Roland. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Walter Farrell and other relatlves.
The funeral was held at A1hambra Wednesday. Mr and Mrs. Roland left Sterling about twelve years ago.
He was for some time engaged in the furniture business here, using the building now known as the Mart paint
shop, which formerly was located on Main street. Mrs. Roland was a charter member of the Methodist church
of Sterling, helping in the organization of the church here.
The family was well known among early residents of Sterling."
