"The grim reaper trailed William Giles Markley into Farmington when he first arrived in 1878. Markley was fighting a losing battle against tuberculosis. His move to New Mexico’s dry climate was part of a desperate effort to improve his health. He left Quincy, Illinois riding much of the way in a bed in the back of a covered wagon. For a short while he lived in Santa Fe and then White Oaks, in the southern part of the territory. Upon his arrival in Farmington he purchased a plot of land from a fellow named Cheeley and induced Mr. Cheeley to build a general store on the site. "

Mr. Cheely has severed his connection with the Buena Vista Democrat, and that paper is now published by an unknown quantity called the Democrat Printing Company. John Cheely, editor and proprietor of the Sterling Record, who has lived
to see his school fellows and playmates of youth become grandfathers and
grandmothers, was married on the 28th ult., and took wife number one to
his bosom. Before leaving on his wedding tour he wrote the following modest
hints to his subscribers for insertion in the Record :
The editor did not inform us, when he left, whether he intended to go to
housekeeping on his return or not. But we are authorized to state to all
delinquents on subscription that we will accept in payment farms, horses,
cows, potatoes, corn, wheat rye ( either in liquid or grain ), barley,
buckwheat, turnips, beets, pumpkins, squashes, turkeys, chickens, eggs,
baled hay, old clothes, and we ( Cheely ) now have use for a few
hair-pins, clothespins, bustles and - well, just ask your wife what a
newly married man would be likely to be in need of and bring it along. We
know what we want, but we are not as yet well enough posted as to the
wearing apparel of a woman.
February 1889 Sterling Advocate
Major Cheely, of the Record, although a red hot Democrat, is personally a pretty good fellow.
John is newly married, lives like Vanderbilt, and knowing that the Advocate man is always hungry,
took him to dinner Thursday. Of course we went, wanting a square meal, and it is hardly necessary to
say we were not disappointed. John is living fat for an editor, but with a change of administration
and the loss of land office patronage will have to come to husks, same as Republican editors
have been doing for the past few years."
"Buena Vista, Colorado Newspapers . — The Herald was founded in 1881 by W. R. Logan, A. R.
Kenney and A. L. Crossan; but finally became the property of Mr. Kennedy, who
sold to D. M. Jones, January 1st, 1891. The Democrat, established by John
Cheeley almost simultaneously with the Herald, was soon afterward sold to a
stock company, with E. B. Jones, manager. In 1883, George Newland bought the
paper and the following year sold to W. R. Logan. The Chaffee County Times,
by P. A. Leonard, was the first newspaper in the town: Mrs. Agnes Leonard Hill.
" The Evans, Colorado Journal was founded in 1871, with Rev. A. C.
Todd as editor. Major J. C. Feebles, Mr. Hartman, James Torrens, Dan Elliot
and John Cheeley were at various times its editors. The Courier, by Samuel
McAfee, is now the only newspaper in the place. "
