Frank Sparks, born March 23, 1892, orphaned at a young age, came to Fleming, Logan County, Colorado from Iowa. As a young man in his twenties he started his career as farm and ranch help. Frank met and married Elsie Work, a school teacher in the Dailey, Colorado one room schoolhouse, May 11, 1917. After opening an implement sales, garage, and Ford dealership, Frank and Elsie began purchasing grazing land in Colorado and Montana. By 1940 the Sparks 20 Bar Ranch was a full time cattle and haying operation in both Colorado and Montana, overshadowing the implement and Ford dealership. Frank and Elsie 's only child, Gertrude Gayle ("Gerty"), attended the Colorado Teaching College, where she soon graduated and while teaching in the Iliff, Colorado school district met her future husband, Lt. Charles Walter Thomas Atkinson ("CWT"), a native of the Iliff area. CWT and Gerty travelled the world in their Air Force career, Gerty serving tea to the Queen of Libya, while CWT advanced in his career. Frank and Elsie, with the assistance of many young men, now retired from their own successful careers, who still remember working with Frank, continued the operation on their own until 1959, when Frank became ill. Lt. Colonel Charles W. T. Atkinson retired from the Air Force, and Gerty with their only child Charles Frank Atkinson, born February 22, 1950, returned to Fleming to assist Frank and Elsie with the ranch. Upon the death of Frank, February 26, 1965, the decision was made to sell the ranch in Montana and focus on the Colorado ranch. Elsie, CWT, Gerty and Charly operated the ranch together until the death of both Elsie, at age 94, and CWT, at age 75, in 1986. Gerty, who was the hub of an active social life, including bridge and dinner parties, and Charly operated the ranch together until Gerty's death in 1992, at age 72. Forward to the current day, Charly, married to Maggie, continues to operate the Sparks 20 Bar Ranch with their daughter, Sara and her three children and their son, Ryan and his two children.
| Gertrude G. Atkinson, 72, of Fleming, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1992,
at Sterling Regional Med Center. Mrs. Atkinson was born May 1, 1919 in Sterling to Frank M. and Elsie Jane Work Sparks. She was raised and attended high school in Fleming. She continued her education at Colorado State College, graduating with a teaching certificate. She taught in the Iliff schools before her marriage to Charles W. T. Atkinson in Fleming in 1942. Mr. Atkinson was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. They traveled extensively while he was in the service and stationed in various countries. Mrs. Atkinson taught in the Fleming schools while Mr. Atkinson was serving in Guam. He returned from the service in 1959. The couple ranched in the Fleming area and assumed management of the Sparks 20 Bar Ranch in 1965, after the death of Mr. Sparks. They ranched and lived in the Fleming area until their respective deaths. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of the Fleming United Methodist Church, Fleming Library Board, Fleming Thursday Study Club, Sterling Reviewers Club, F.S. Chapter of the P.E.O. and various bridge groups. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Atkinson, who died Jan. 24, 1986. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles F. and Maggie Atkinson of Fleming; a granddaughter, Sarah Atkinson of Fleming; a grandson, Ryan Atkinson of Fleming; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Glaser of Colorado Springs and Dorothy Acott of Fleming. Visitation will be 2 p.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Sunday. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Fleming United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Moorman officiating. |

Philip D. “Dud” Mattoon of Longmont died Tuesday, Dec. 3,
2002, at his home. He was 79. He was born June 25, 1923, to
A. Maxwell and Margaret (Scilley) Mattoon in Loveland. He
received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Colorado
State University.
Mr. Mattoon served in the U.S. Army during World War II in
the European Theater. In 1955, he moved to Longmont, where
he taught vocational agriculture for 10 years
He became the director of Adult and Vocational Education for
the St. Vrain Valley School District and created the
district’s Career Development Center.
He retired in 1976 and began working in adult education for
the Presbyterian Church, locally and regionally.
Mr. Mattoon was a member of the Golden K. Kiwanis, the
Longmont Educational Foundation, was a ruling elder at
Central Presbyterian Church and served on numerous
committees. He was an avid gardener and loved traveling, his
mountain cabin, music and spending time with his family.
Mr. Mattoon was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Kester) Mattoon; three
daughters, Jan Kimble and her husband Jim of Birmingham,
Ala., Kit Josh and her husband Butch of Frederick and Jo
Mattoon and her husband Walt Hubis of Louisville; a son, Jim
Mattoon and his wife Judy of Loveland; seven grandchildren;
a brother, Dr. James Mattoon and his wife Martha of Colorado
Springs; a sister, Pat Waltermire and her husband Kent of
Longmont; an aunt, Jule Clark; a sister-in-law, Ida Mattoon
of Loveland; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and
grandnephews.
Cremation has been held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and
Crematory. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday,
Dec. 6, at Central Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Glenn
Perica and Marilyn Yoder Boeke of the church officiating. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
Central Presbyterian Church, 402 Kimbark St., Longmont
80501.
Helen Louise (Kester) , 84, of Longmont died March 12, 2009, at the Peaks Care Center. She was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Loveland to Glen and Edna (Graham) Kester. She graduated from Loveland High School and Colorado State University. She and husband Dud spent their early marriage in Delta and explored the entire Western Slope of Colorado. After moving to Longmont in 1955, she taught science at Mead Junior High until 1964. Helen served as both an elder and a deacon at Central Presbyterian Church and as an active volunteer in the community. She was a master bridge player, and travel was an avocation. Family and her mountain cabin were her other great passions in life. Strong friendships were maintained through many groups, especially P.E.O. and her “Mondays” club. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 57 years, Philip “Dud” Mattoon. Helen is survived by children Jan Kimble and husband Jim of Birmingham, AL, Kathryn “Kit” Josh and husband Walter “Butch” of Frederick, Jim Mattoon and wife Judy of Loveland, and Jo Mattoon and husband Walt Hubis of Lafayette. She also is survived by grandchildren Karen Kimble and husband Chris Jarrett of Decatur, GA, Steve Kimble of West Lafayette, IN, Erik Josh of Frederick, Caleb Mattoon of Upton, NY, Claire Mattoon Dinneen of Fort Collins and her husband Fintan of Dunmanway, Ireland, Rachel Carter and husband Mike of Greeley, Rebecca Hubis of Louisville, and great-granddaughter Airabella Carter of Greeley. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Central Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ann Scheiber of the church officiating. |

| Elinor K. Brown, 90, of Sterling, died Saturday, April 9, 1994, at
Haxtun Hospital. Visitation and viewing started today at Chaney-Walters Funeral Home. Funeral is 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ivan Rundus officiating and with Debbie Hessler as lay pastor's assistant. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 9, 1903, to Frank and Lucy Green Kester in Loveland. When she was young, her family moved to the Fleming/LeRoy area near the Green family. She attended country schools and was often the only student in her grade. Mrs. Brown graduated from Fleming High School in 1918, and then worked at the Fleming Post Office. She married Dean S. Brown Jan. 8, 1922, at her parent's home southwest of Fleming. The couple moved many times. They resided on a farm southwest of Fleming, then moved north of Fleming and later to Crook before residing on the homestead of her grandparents in Kelly. Then in 1958, the couple bought the Kellogg-Fyffe place where Mrs. Brown resided until a few months before her death. Besides her three children, Mrs. Brown had a foster daughter from India, Volarmothey Balakirshna,who the Browns assisted for many years. She received an advanced piano education in her youth, often times riding horseback to various neighbors for lessons. She was the pianist at the Kelly Church for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, No. 68, the White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 3, the Kelly Society of World Service and in her later years she was involved with the Women's Society at First Presbyterian Church. She was a 50-year member of the Kelly Home Improvement Club and was on the Logan County Council, serving as president in the 1940s. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Boyes and husband Stan of Greeley, Beverly Summers and husband Carl of Crook; a son, Kenneth and wife Margaret of Hayward, Calif.; sister-in-law, Patricia Kester of Sterling; nine grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and numerous cousins and relatives throughout northeastern Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990, two brothers and a sister.

| March 30, 1963 Iola Kansas: Graveside services will be held at LaHarpe Monday afternoon at 2 p. m. for Mrs. Eisie Kester of Tucson, Ariz. Mrs. Kester, widow of William B. Kester and long a resident of this vicinity, died Thursday at Tucson. She was a native of South Schroon, Essex County, New York, and came to Allen County in, 1895. She was the daughter of William P. and Laura Annie Pereau. Mrs. Kester lived here most of her life, moving to Arizona a few years ago to be near her daughter, Mrs. Beatty Ray. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In addition to her daughter, two sons survive her, Clarence Kester and Leighton Kester, both of Kansas City; also two brothers, Willis Pereau, Colorado Springs, and Walter Pereau, Independence. The body will lie in state at the Waugh Funeral Home on Monday, until shortly before the graveside service. Local relatives and friends of Mrs. Kester will leave from there in going to LaHarpe. The Rev. Thomas Nyquist will conduct the service. |

Stephen was of German descent, a number of the Kester, Koester and Keister's settled in Pennsylvania, living also in Ohio and Colorado. Stephen's father Harrison enlisted in the civil war in 1865 at the age of 21" This Sumner 1868-1941 is buried in Newkirk, Kay County Oklahoma.
