Joseph Janda, James Janda 

One tree said the Janda family Wenzel and Marie, with sons Martin , Franz Joseph, and Joseph Frank Janda arrived in Baltimore Sept 10, 1880.

In 1900 Ellsworth County, Kansas, James born March 1849 in bohemia, married 26 hyears to Mary 1859, also Bohemia, have Martin Dec 1874, Frank March 1877, Joseph May 1879 - these three born in Bohemia.  James March 1885 , Nit April 1888, Frend June 1892, and KarriedJuly 1894 were al born in Kansas.

In 1905 Ellsworth County, Kansas, Joseph Janda is 25, Annie 26, with Emnie 1 and Marry 5. In 1910 Leroy precinct, Logan County, Joseph Janda, 31 born in Bohemia, married to Mary, 21, born in Nebraska.  They have ?Elen 2  born in Nebraska and Joseph 1 born in Colorado.

Joseph  proved up  two quarters  in 5, 5N 50W and 32, 6N 50W in 1913.  One quarter was in Logan County, another in Washington County.

In 1920 Ellsworth County, Kansas, Joseph F. Janda is 40, immigrating in 1881,  with Anna, 40, born in Kansas, daughter of Frank and Anna Maller. With them are Emma 16 born in Kansas, Marie 15 Kansas, Joseph F. 11 Kansas (maybe the elderly parents Frank and Anna gave the information)

Joseph and Annie are farming in Ellsworth County in 1940, with niece Rose Zelenka 18 born in Kansas living with them.

Joseph Janda Sr. 1879-1966 and Annie 1879-1945 are buried in the Wilson Kansas cemetery.

On the next page in 1940 Ellsworth County are Fred E. Janda 49 born in Kansas and his family five kids, and Frank Janda 63 born in Bohemia with his family a 52-year-old wife Marie and two adult daughters, both teachers.

James petitioned In May of 1913 for naturalization and appeared in the district court at Akron in 1914, witnesses Joseph Janda, William M. Cartright.

In 1920 Washington County, Colorado James is 44, saying he immigrated in 1884, naturalized 1914.  Pauline B. is 33, Nebraska, James E. 17 Nebraska, Helen 13 Idaho, Pauline 12 Idaho, Rosa W. 11 Idaho, Jenette E. 9 Colorado, Irwin J. 7 Colorado, Anne G. 3 Colorado, William J. 3 Colorado, and Edith 1, Colorado.

In 1930 Washington County they have James E. 28, Herman J. 15, William J. and Anna G. both 13, Edith I. 11 and Alice E. 10.

 

 James -1877-1945 and Paulene B. 1887-1974 are buried in the Burdett cemetery, Washington County.  So is James E. Janda, Jr. 1902-1938.

William Janda 1913-1984 is buried in Littleton, Colorado, with Anne -1915-1997.

Herman "Bob" Janda, 79, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1992 at Rose Arbor Manor.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at Chaney-Walters Funeral Home with the Rev. Milbern Goetz officiating. Graveside services will be conducted by Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336. Burial at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation begins 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 at Chaney Walters Funeral Home.
Mr. Janda was born Jan. 7, 1913 in Otis to James and Pauline (Verba) Janda. He was born and raised on the family farm in the Burdett community near Otis, where he also attended school. He farmed with his father and later for himself.
He married Geneva Boothe of Otis in Greeley on March 26, 1935. Later he purchased the family home where he was born and lived there for 43 years. They moved to Sterling in 1985. He loved farming, fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Otis, and the Sterling BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336. He was an Elk member for 28 years.
Mr. Janda is survived by his wife, Geneva Janda of Sterling; a son, Gary Lee and wife Barbara Janda of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Bill of Denver; six sisters, Pauline Clark and Jeanette Johnson, of Denver, Rose Myers and Ann Byers, both of Sacramento, Calif., Frances Wilson of Minnesota and Edith Fennell of Sterling; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edith Irene Fennell, 95 of Sterling, passed away Mon, June 9, 2014 in Sterling. Visitation will be Mon, June 16, 2014 from 10am until 6pm with family receiving friends from 4pm until 6pm at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral service Tues., June 17 at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Michelle Witherspoon officiating, interment Riverside Cemetery. Edith was born Sept. 16, 1918 in Burdett, CO to James and Pauline Vrba Janda. She was a longtime area resident living in the Kelly area, she moved to Wadena, Iowa during the Great Depression. She returned to Sterling. Edith married Raymond L. Fennell, Nov. 18, 1933 in Sterling. They later settled at the farm in the early 1940's, where they raised cattle, chickens, turkeys and raised wheat and sun millet. She loved writing poetry and singing. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Edith is survived by son Arden Fennell and Sonja Holden of Sterling; sister Genieve Ann Byars of Carmichael, CA; grandson Dave Mantelli and wife June of Scott Valley, CA; great grandson Sam Mantelli of Scott Valley, CA; step great granddaughter Sonya Fennell of Sterling and step great grandson Raven Fennell of Sterling, with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by parents, husband in 1988, daughter Sharon Rae, brothers Bill Janda, Herman Janda, sisters Alice, Pauline, Rose, Jeanie and Helen, half sisters Frances, Lily and Emily, and half brother Jimmy. Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Elevator Fund. 
In 1935 Denver, L. Milan Meade and Alice E. are living at 717 E. 6th Avenue.

In 1940 Washington County, Colorado, Cope precinct, L.M Mead is managing a farm, 29, wih Alice 20.  They have John Larry 3, Barbara Jane 2, Elsa Carol 1, and Don Leroy four months.

Larry M. "Mike" Meade 1911-1974 and Alice B. Mead 1920-1984 are buried in Yuma.

Alice married Robert Conrad Smith, who was killed in an auto accident, and then married Ralph Anderson.

John Larry Meade -1936-1982 and Marvel R. Meade 1940-1982 are buried in Yuma.

Thomas R. Meade, age 68, better known as Tom, loving husband, dad, and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 in Denver after a three week battle against pneumonia and congestive heart failure. Tom was born March 13, 1943 in Yuma to Larry (Mike) Milen Meade and Alice (Janda) Meade. He grew up in a large, loving, musical family where he played in the family band at the age of 9. The Colorado Wonders played at many shows and dances throughout the Cope area. The Colorado Wonders also played on Goodland, Kan. television in the early 1960s. The band was later called The Rainbow Valley boys. Tom graduated from Arickaree High School in 1961. After graduation, Tom and brothers; Dave, Allen, and Don went to Wichita, Kan. and booked shows with Professional Artists Inc. Tom also formed his own band, The Country Gentlemen, and traveled throughout the Midwest. Later, he moved the band to Fort Collins and continued to lead his band for shows. It was around 1974 or 1975 that Tom moved back to Joes and started a machine and welding shop. Throughout the years he developed his many skills that made him into a handyman who could fix anything and everything; and sometimes develop some contraptions of his own. He also formed a band named The Outlaws that performed throughout Eastern Colorado sharing the sounds of country western music. December 18, 1985, Tom married Sonja (Franz) Crow at their home in Burlington. Through this union Tom inherited two daughters, Jackie and Melissa, whom he loved and raised as his own.

They later made their home in Bethune until they moved to Stratton in 1995. Tom worked at Hitchcock Inc. in Burlington as a machinist where he worked 15-plus years until his retirement in 2007. Sonja also retired in 2007 after 25 years at UPS. They spent their retirement traveling to see family, following the grandkids at their ball games, and enjoying their love together. Tom continued to play his music in a band called The Shadow Riders at numerous churches and events throughout the area. He also did upholstery work, quilting, canning, fishing, hunting, and sharing life with his beloved wife Sonja. In 2010, they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Tom was known for his ornery antics, big heart, and willingness to help others. He was always giving someone a hard time or making a joke. His loving and caring heart always touched others and made him friends wherever he went. Tom never knew a stranger and enjoyed visiting with everyone. He was someone you could always count on to be there when you needed him. He was deeply loved by his family and will be dearly missed. Tom is survived by his wife Sonja of Stratton; daughter Jackie McCaffrey and husband Terry of Vona. Grandchildren Callie of McPherson, Kan, Whitney of Denver, Tiffany and Landon of Vona. Brothers Don Meade and wife Jan of Okemos, Mich.; Dave Meade and wife Sue of Ty Ty, Ga.; sister Barbara (Meade) Frei and husband Clarence of Pampa, Texas; sister-in-law Cara (Franz) Daise and husband Terry of Goodland, Kan.; brother-in-law Kyle Franz and wife Marlinda of Burlington; sister-in-law Tammy (Gay) Franz of Burlington also survive him. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and family members. Tom is preceded in death by his parents Mike and Alice Meade, daughter Melissa Cole, brothers John (Jack) L. Meade and Allen Meade, sister Carole (Meade) Jones, and brothers-in-law Joel Franz and Ryan Franz. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Stratton Activities Center, in Stratton, with burial following at Kanorado, Kan.

Barbara Frei, 76, died September 10, 2013 in Pampa, Texas. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, September 16, 2013, at Fairview Cemetery, with Pastor Paul Nachtigall of Highland Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.Mrs. Frei was born September 9, 1937 in Yuma, Colorado. She attended schools in Cope, Colorado. She lived in Cope, Akron, Colorado and Greeley, Colorado for a few years before moving to Pampa in the early 1970?s. Barbara worked at Ray & Bill's Grocery, B & B Beef Processing, Empire Cafe and Pampa Nursing Center. She enjoyed crafts, especially sewing, crocheting and knitting. She liked the outdoors where she enjoyed fishing. Most of all, Barbara will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Alice Meade, two daughters, Arla Yount and Robin Fritts, three brothers, Tom Meade, Allen Meade and Jack Meade, and a sister, Carole Jones. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Frei of the home, two daughters, Janie McPherson of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Cindy Hinds and husband Gene of Pampa, a son, Jim Turner of Williston, North Dakota, two sons-in-law, Darrell Yount of Colgate, Oklahoma and Vance Fritts of Pampa, two brothers, Don Meade and wife Jan of Okemos, Michigan, and Dave Meade and wife Sue of Ty Ty, Georgia, a sister-in-law, Sonja Meade of Stratton, Colorado, 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
