March 18, 1945.
Samuel Thomas LAIR, Former Resident of Kelly District, Dies
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday
afternoon at the Kelly Evangelical church for Samuel Thomas LAIR,
aged 94 years, who died at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at a hospital
in Sterling. He had been a patient at the institution for a week and
had been ill for ten days. Mr. Lair was born March 9, 1851 at
Carlinsville [sic], Ill., some [sic] of James and Ellen WELCH LAIR.
He lived successively at Carlinsville [sic], Ill., Wilbur, Neb., and
in the Kelly community of Logan county. He homesteaded in the latter
district in 1907, remaining there until 1919 when he came to
Sterling. Mr. LAIR was married, November 22, 1877, at Carlinsville
[sic], Ill., to Angelina CRAYS. He held membership in the Christian
church.
Surviving Mr. LAIR are the following children: Mrs. Ada CARTRIGHT
[sic] of Greeley, Walter LAIR of Sterling, Mrs. Cyrus HUNT of
Dawson, Neb., Mrs. Herbert M. STANLEY of Sterling, Bernard LAIR of
Otis, Colo., Mrs. Elmer H. BARNES and Mrs. Pearl [sic] BARNES of Los
Angeles, Calif., Mrs. William BLACKMORE of Otis, Colo., and Samuel
LAIR of Sterling; 23 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. The
funeral service will be conducted by Rev. E.J. NESS, and burial will
be at the Burdette cemetery. ----------------------------------------------------- June 23, 1920
Lydia Angelina CRAYS, was born in Carlinville, Ill. March 2, 1861.
How she spent her childhood day, when about sixteen years of age,
united with the Christian Church of which she has been a faithful
member, leading a Christian life. She was united in marriage to
Samuel T. LAIR, November 22, 1877. To this union were born thirteen
children, four having passed away in infancy. Moving to Wilbeur
[sic], Nebr in the fall of 1885, living there until the spring of
1909, when they came to Burdette, Colo., locating upon a homestead,
where they resided until a few months ago, when they went to
Sterling, staying with their daughter, Mrs. Wm. CARTWRIGHT during
the latter's sickness, where she passed away Wednesday, June 23,
1920, after a lingering illness of six and one-half years. Although
not bedfast until the past four months, was a patient sufferer and
bore her pains cheerfully, never complaining, always having a smile
for every visitor. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, S.T.
LAIR, three sons, Walter E., Bernard N., and Samuel S. LAIR and six
daughters, Mrs. Wm. CARTWRIGHT, Mrs. H.M. STANLEY, Mrs. Cyrus HUNT,
Mrs. W.G. BLACKMORE, Mrs. Elmer BARNES and Mrs. T.P. BARNES and
fourteen grandchildren, besides an aged mother, three brothers and
six sisters. The family were all at the bedside except one daughter,
Mrs. HUNT of Dawson, Nebr., The deceased was 59 yrs. 3 mo. and 21
days old. Funeral services were held at Kelly church, Rev. AYERS of
Sterling conducting the services. The remains were laid to rest in
the Burdett cemetery.

Thomas is a carpenter in 1930 Los Angeles County, and they have Enos 12,
Marveletta 8, both born in Colorado, and Roy, 3, born in California.
Marvellette, born Jun 8, 1921, died August 31, 1933 in Los Angeles, buried in
Inglewood Park.

superintendent of the Burdett Presbyterian church and became a carpenter in Los
Angeles, living in Long Beach. They had

Muriel Marie Barnes born Oct 10, 1921, married Bruce Lewis Ripley in 1939 Los
Angeles.
They also had Emma Lee born Sept 11, 1932, married Willard Freelove in Los

Walter Edwin Barnes June 29, 1934 in Mountainburg Arkansas, married Judy Ann
Jacobson in 1965 Los Angeles (2), Navy officer, and then a school teacher in

Letha Fern Vandas, 87, of Sterling, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in
Sterling of natural causes. Visitation will be from 10 am until 7
p.m. today, Dec. 2, at Tennant Funeral Home. Memorial services will
be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the First Presbyterian
Church with the Rev. Steve Schorr officiating.
Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Mrs. Vandas was born Aug. 3, 1915, to Walter Lair and Stella
(Wheeler) Lair in Burdett. She grew up in the Burdett community,
where she was active in the Presbyterian Church and young peoples
group. She graduated from high school in Otis in 1932. She moved to
Sterling to work in 1938. On Oct. 1, 1939, she married Charles Dodd.
He died on June 8, 1956. Two daughters were born to this couple,
Charlotte Lambrecht and Carol Steinbach. Mrs. Vandas went to work
for Dr. Charles Vandas on Jan. 13, 1957, as a dental receptionist.
On July 13, 1963, she married Kenneth Wagner. He died on May 25,
1970. She continued to work for Dr. Vandas and on June 27, 1984,
they were married.
Mrs. Vandas is survived by her husband; daughters Charlotte
Lambrecht and husband Ed of Sterling, and Carol Steinbach and
husband John of Sidney, Neb.; step-son Jeffrey Vandas; step
daughters Paula Negilski and Gay Vandas; six grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; four step- grandchildren and one great-
grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Plains.

Bertha Irene Lair, born Jan 22, 1890 in Wilbur, Nebraska, married George W.
Blackmore, and in 1920 Washington County they're farming. He's 35, born in

William G. 1888-1945 and Bertha J. 1890-1992 (# # 21183148) are

Perry "P.D." Dale Blackmore, 87, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Dec. 2,
2008 in Sterling. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday,
Dec. 6, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Otis. Interment will
follow at Otis Cemetery.
Mr. Blackmore was born on June 3, 1921, to William G. and Bertha (Lair)
Blackmore in Sterling.
He was raised and lived on the family homestead 20 miles Northeast of
Otis, for 87 years until his death. He took over the farm in the early
20s with the passing of his father.
On Feb. 17, 1946, he married Alice Diel at the Methodist Parsonage in
Sterling.
He was very active in the community when not working on the family farm.
He worked for the Northeast Colorado Telephone Company. He served as the
Northeast Colorado Telephone Company president for 20 years, the ASCS
for six years, the farm/home Administration board for five years, and
the Hillcrest school board for two years. He drove a bus for the
Lonestar School for many years.
Mr. Blackmore is survived by his wife, Alice of 62 years; daughter,
Debra Anderson and husband Mike of Sterling; granddaughter, Kay Metzler
and husband Aaron of Otis; and great-grandchildren, Makenna and Mason
Metzler; his sister, Annabelle Diel; brother-in-law, Elmer Diel;
sister-in-law, Rosie (Roth) Diel; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Alice's parents; and
brother-in-law, Raymond Diel. |
