William Cartwright, 72 years old, a farmer living six miles east of Greeley, died at the Greeley hospital at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening, September 11, 1936,  from injuries sustained five hours before when he was hit by an automobile.

Mr. Cartwright was the twenty-fourth auto accident victim in Weld county since January 1.

Mr. Cartwright was hit by a light coupe, driven by Aaron Burkhardt, 22, who lives 10 miles east of Greeley on the Eighth street road.

Stepping across the highway from his home which is on the Eighth street road, Mr. Cartwright took mail from a mailbox and started back across the road.  He apparently became confused by the oncoming car and stepped directly in its path.  He was struck by a fender and dragged 20 feet.

Burkhardt took the aged man into the Cartwright home and immediately afterward he was removed to the Greeley hospital.

Mr. Cartwright sustained a leg fracture and an arm fracture in the accident.  Death was probably directly due to the shock of the accident.  The death was the twenty-fourth due to traffic accidents in Weld county this year.

The body was taken to Sattley's mortuary.

Deputy Sheriff Theodore Tegtman investigated the accident and notified Coroner Richard Armstrong.

No inquest will be held into the death, officers saying that the accident was apparently unavoidable so far as the driver of the car is concerned.

Mr. Cartwright is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ada Cartwright, at home and a son, Clay, of Otis.

Funeral service will be at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon from Sattley's chapel, with interment at Linn Grove.
