James Leroy and May J. (Griffith) Armstrong

In 1910 Logan County, Leroy precinct, James is 22, born in Iowa, married seven months to May, 19, also born in Iowa.

James cash-claimed  a quarter in 29, 6N 50W in 1912.  He was the only Armstrong claiming land in the south part of Logan County - the others were in the north.

James Leroy Armstrong registered  in Charles City, Iowa, saying he was born August 28, 1887 in Martilli, Iowa.

James is farming in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa in 1920, with May J. 29, James G. 6, and Ellen M. 3.  James G. was born in Iowa, so May, at least, didn't stay more than four years in Colorado.

J.L. 31 and May 33 are in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa in 1925, with James 11, Ellen 7, and Phylis 3.

In 1930 Huron County, Michigan, James is 41, a farm laborer, and May says she's 29???, first married at 19.  They have James 16, Ellen 13, and Phyllis 8 - all three born in Iowa.

James is a laborer in 1940 St. Clair County, Michigan, with Mae 49, and Phyllis 18.

He registered for WWII in Anchorville Michigan, with Miss Phyllis Armstrong as his relative.

October 7, 1959, Santa Cruz Sentinel Mr. and Mrs. James L. Armstrong, who live in the "house with the old-fashioned flower garden" at 209 Aptos Beach drive, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday at their home. The Armstrongs, who came here six years ago on a trip, liked it so well they stayed to raise flowers by the .bay. Their garden, which is a profusion of zinnias, dahlias, petunias and marigolds, is a source of pleasure to many passers-by who stop in to compliment them, according to their daughter, Mrs. George Petipren of Harrisburg, Pa. The Petiprens were among out-of-town family members here Sunday for the open house honoring the celebrants. Also here were the Armstrongs' son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James G. Armstrong of Santa Maria, who had entertained them in the south last week. Unable to attend Sunday were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Teschler of Libby, Mont., and their three children, Ellen, Linda and James. The Armstrongs were married September 29, 1909, at Martelle, Ia, in a home double wedding ceremony with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. D. K. Chapin. Mrs. Armstrong was the former Miss Jane Mae Griffith of Anamosa, Ia. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong lived for 25 years in Detroit where he was employed as a factory technician.

Santa Cruz December 22, 1974 In Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1974,  Mrs. Jane Mae Armstrong. Survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ellen Pitipren of Harrisburg Penn., and Mrs. Phyllis Teschler of Cincinnati, Ohio and a son James G. Armstrong of Salinas, Calif. Also survived by three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Native of Martelle, Iowa, aged 84 years. Services will be conducted at White's Chapel, 138 Walnut Ave,, Tuesday, December 24, at 11 a.m. Friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment in Oakwood Memorial Park.

In 1896 Anamosa had a prison, and a fire broke out John Griffith, at the waterworks engine-house, gave the firemen 140 pounds direct pressure at his end of the line. Without this it is certain that the boiler and electric light plant would have been lost. A telegram was sent to Cedar Rapids for a steamer by someone at the prison but word was returned that it could not be furnished. It was not necessary, however, as the fire was finally brought under control.

May's parents might be John C. and Adaline Griffith, in Jones County Iowa in 1900.  William E. is 20, Grace 18, Edna L. 12, and Laura M. 9.

John received a patent for a cement block molding machine in 1914.

John is buried in Anamosa # 76400815, dying in 1919, Adaline (Hepler) Griffith dying in 1904.

  George L. Petipren - 1914-2000 is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Anchorville, Michigan, with Ellen A. Petipren - Dec 233, 1916 - March 15, 1999. 

Phyllis Joy (Armstrong) Teschler, 88, former Libby resident, died March 5, 2010, in Billings.

She was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Ventura, Iowa, the third child of Jane Mae Griffith and James Leroy Armstrong. She married Howard Teschler on Jan. 2, 1942 in New Haven, Mich. While her husband went off to fight in World War II, she worked as a hospital aide.
 

After the war, the couple moved to Montana. Their first daughter, Linda, was born in Miles City and their next daughter, Ellen, and their son, Jim, were born in Fort Benton. Her husband later returned to school and got his degree and the family moved to Libby, and then to Cincinnati, Ohio where Howard died.

Mrs. Teschler moved to Michigan to care for her mother-in-law and then to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Nampa, Idaho and finally to Billings where she was cared for by the staff of Edgewood Vista.

She is survived by her daughters; sons-in-law, Michael and Patrick; granddaughters, Lynnet and Sarah; grandson, George; great-grandsons, Cole and Gavin; and many extended family members.
