"One by one the members of the Colonists, the sturdy band of pioneers who came here and
made the... blossom have gone to their reward. Dr. Stillman K. Thompson, one of the best
known and most highly respected of the pioneers, passed away Sunday afternoon his family home,
11-2 Sixth street. Although in failing health, Dr. Thompson has been able to get out in good
weather during the winter months and was on the streets in his runabout ten days ago.
By Dr. Thompson's death the community has lost one of its most powerful influences for
good. Modest in manner, he was always active in church work and gave most liberally to the
church and charity, though always in a quiet way. Dr. Thompson was active in the
establishment of the First Baptist Church in Greeley and in the early days was Sunday
school superintendent and was faithful in all lines of the
church work He was a deacon of the church at the time of his death.
Born in Poultney, 82 years ago, Dr. Thompson was married in the east in 1851 to
Miss Mercy Frisbie. They came to Greeley in l870 and have since lived here except the
winters when they have sought a milder climate. Dr. Thompson celebrated his
eighty-second birthday in December, when he received flowers and a congratulatory letter
from the Society of Union Colony Pioneers, of which he was a member. For years after coming
to Greeley Dr. Thompson practiced dentistry, but retired from active work a number
of years ago. Dr. Thompson and wife spent sixteen winters in southern California to escape
the severe weather here.
Two years ago they remained in Greeley, last year they were in California,
and this winter decided to remain at home. Dr. Thompson is survived by his widow,
one brother, who lives in Poultney, and one adopted daughter, Mrs. Flla Davis,
who lives near Pueblo.
Funeral services will be conducted at the house at 1:20 Tuesday afternoon."
His brother Also died in 1913 in Poultney " Mr. Lorriston E. Thompson was the son of
Frederick M. and Emma Horn Thompson, the only other child being Stillman,
who died December 19l3 at Greeley, Oil.
He married Miss Harriet Chittenden, and to them were born the son aforenamed, Frederick and one daughter. Mis. Emma M. Pierce, of Sterling. 111."
