REMINISCENCE.
[By T. B. Sutherland]
When our family removed to section 15, town- ship 2 north, range 8 east, since named Sylvester, a distance of seven miles, we passed only three houses, and there were only eighty rods between the two farthest. Our house 18x20 feet inside was surrounded by grass five to seven feet high, and a spring of thirty feet in circumference and three feet deep was searched in vain for by the three younger members of the family, a reward being offered if we found it that night, which we failed to do. A huge fire place supplied heat and a place to cook our food. There were at this time five boys-Martin, John, Solomon, James and myself, (Thomas Benton) and two girls-Esther Jane and Frank C....
In the spring of 1858, I started with my cousin, W. W. Sutherland, to look for government land, walking from the town of Sylvester to Chippewa Falls, with the exception of a ride on the cars of sixty miles, and two miles in a wagon. We walked over fifty miles one day, and for several days made from forty to forty-five miles. ...

( T.B. Sutherland, who has been making his home here the last three years, slipped off about two weeks ago and on the 12th inst., was married at Lincoln, Nebraska to M r s. Sarah Sherman. The wedding was an elegant affair and was under the supervision of Mrs. Lewis McKahan, who also resided here a number of years ago and is a sister to the bride. Albany Vindicator, July 12, 1906.)

Together they came to Wisconsin in 1856, settling in the town of Sylvester. After a stay of five years, they returned to the state of New York where Mr. Sutherland died within a year or two of his return east. Mrs. Sutherland returned with her two children to Wisconsin and has dwelt here until the time of her death which occurred after a brief illness at the home of her daughter Mrs. Luke, on April 6, aged 82. She has been a cripple since childhood as the result of an accident when very young.
The deceased was the youngest of 12 children and was baptized into the Methodist Church. A friend who had ample opportunity for many years to know her, spoke with warm appreciation of her abilities as a housekeeper being an industrious, hard working woman. While like all pioneers she cannot but be missed, nevertheless, we believe it to be a wise Providence that took her to Himself where no pain or anguish can follow her. We believe there is a home for the aged and infirm who nobly fought life's battles.
She leaves one son Clarence, a daughter, Ella Luke, and a grandson Charlie. Services were held at the home of her daughter conducted by Rev. Peter Black. The remains were interred Sunday afternoon in the village cemetery. "
